Spooky title, I know, but seriously my 2000 civic likes to start accelerating on its own while in cruise control. The logical option to me was to never use it again, but I was curious if this could be a quick fix.

Basically when I put it in cruise control, it will maintain whatever speed I set it at. If I go up a hill though, it will start accelerating to try and keep that speed, but it won't stop accelerating after that. It's almost as though the pedal gets locked down. I had some time to play around with it while I was driving across Kansas (long straight roads with no traffic), and if I lift the pedal up (put my foot under it and apply pressure upwards) after shutting off cruise control, it will stop accelerating. It doesn't have a max speed either that I know of, I let it get up to 85 from 65.

This only happens with cruise control;the pedal has never stayed down like that outside of cruise control nor has the car decided to accelerate on its own.

Any ideas?

The cruise control unit must have a problem, although that would be pretty unusual.
