Question '00 EX Acceleration Problems

2000 Civic EX; 130,000 miles
Sudden loss of acceleration between first and second, as well as second and third. If I don't force it (pedal-to-the-floor), the RPM will continue to fall to 500 or until the engine randomly regains power and the RPM jumps to around 4,000, then back to normal acceleration.
Once I hit fourth, it's smooth sailing.
Set in a new fuel filter shortly after the trouble started, five months ago.
Haven't had the cash to take it to the dealership to have the engine checked (there are some other maintenance issues I need to catch up on. Bad rotors, a new belt or two.) I'd set in a new O2 sensor about the time this started.

What's the fix for this?
Better yet, what the crap's happening under the hood?

I'm having the same issue with my 2000 LX. I'm doing my own search but if any one can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated.

To both of you: Start by going to the auto parts store and have them scan it for codes (it's free) then post the code(s) here.
