Civic not pulling away cleanly

I have 1999 Honda Civic with cvt transmission 1600cc, vtec. Most of the time it works ok, but after it's warmed up properly it misbehaves. When I stop at a junction etc. and then try to pull away, the engine revs rise very slowly and it takes a good second or 2 before the car starts moving. It's almost as if it's trying to pull away in a very high gear. As a result I have narrowly avoided a few collisions as I try to pull away and other drivers expect me to move more quickly than I do. Once I do get moving, the car behaves perfectly, until I stop at the next junction etc. The transmission oil has been completely drained, flushed and replaced with new Honda CVT fluid, and the car is generally in good order. The problem seems to have got worse since I had a new timing belt fitted - although that may just be my imagination. Also fuel consumption is very high since the belt change. Many thanks for reading this, and for any help you can give.

Re: Civic not pulling away cleanly

I have the same problem with my 97civic Ex... after my timing belt changed, it actually accelerated better, until my first fill up, then it started sucking again. but that too could have been my imagination. Gas mileage has been 21-24mpg since i bought the car 4 months ago. Would love to see some possible solutions here...

My guess for both you guys is your timing belt is off a tooth, possibly 2. When the timing belt is off (meaning the cam was turned during installation, so the timing marks dont line up), you can experience slugish acceleration, bad fuel mileage, general lack of power, etc.

I recommend taking back to whomever did the work and have them check it.

Apologies for being slow with the reply.

Many thanks for taking the time to help out.

Your advice is good. Sadly the people who fitted my new timing belt are no longer in business and I had to take the car to a local Honda dealer. After I gave them the best part of my children's inheritance, they re-fitted the belt and all is now well.

Re: Civic not pulling away cleanly

more than likely a problem with the cvt pulley/belt system (these honda cvts have all sorts of issues). timing belt should not have anything to do with it. if the car drives fine after getting up to speed, its not an engine/timing issue.

agreeing with gearbox, my experiences with misaligned timing marks are if it runs that bad from being out of time CEL with misfire and crank sensor codes and runs like crap regaurdless of speed or RPM
