engine swap issue

i recently had a large problem with my cars stock motor. <d16y7> (aside from its smoking and lack of power) the cam gear keway sheared off so i said f*** this engine and i purchased a d16a for a replacement.
this was all fine and dandy the swap went ok we got it running and then shut it off to bolt up the exhaust and tie up some loose ends finishd all that and started one more time to go for a test ride then it shut off and now wont start i know its a spark issue i just dont know why the hell it stopped running in the first place.

any ideas?

Re: engine swap issue

easy to find out
well 96 motor is obd2 i dont know about d series but for a b series like civic si b16a2 or the b18 would have a diffrent ignition coil wire than a 95 and under b16a2 del sol or b18 gsr
thus obd2 has secondary o2 sensor whiches obd2 ecu reads off
another way is to get a obd2 scanner and see if theres any funny number.
i had a car that was a 99 civic with 94 gsr and they try to lie to me that its ob2
but when i plug in the scanner it failed to read any codes

Re: engine swap issue

i got a computer from a 93 del sol to plug into my car for this swap and it had 2 rows of pins and my stock computer has 3 rows is 3 rows obd2 or obd3? as far as scanning for codes that car would have all sorts of codes anyways it has never had the check engine light off since I've owned it but it never had a spark issue and always ran fine

Re: engine swap issue

check for power at the coil, make sure its getting power also did you use a obd2 to obd1 adapter for the 93 del sol ecm?

Re: engine swap issue

didnt use the sol ecm on account of it not having the correct plugs im still on the stock 96 non vtec ecm. i asked a few other people and the response i got from them was crank position sensor but it seems strage that it would just let go after running for like 20 minutes tho thats my next p.o.i.

Re: engine swap issue

You are running or trying to run a b16a on a d16y7 ecm? That in itself is a problem, and yes it sounds like a crank sensor, did you use the one already on the del sol motor or did you reuse yours?. The d16y7 ecm will not run that engine very well if at all, it will have incorrect air/fuel ratios and no vtec which you are going to want after that swap. Its not just a matter of bolting it in and plugging it in and good to go. That motor is going to need the correct ecm first off, next read this link for the info you are going to need; https://www.civicforums.com/forums/2...er-models.html that will help you get a handle on things

Re: engine swap issue

it was running for a while on that ecm. the issue i found was spark it just stopped having any. i knew the vtec wouldnt work i just wanted it to run till i got it all working right. and its a d series engine its a single cam unsure if that makes it d or b i'm new to this i just know it was running and stopped now has zero spark thanks for the link tho.

Re: engine swap issue

If memory serves the crank sensor on the b16a reads differently than the d series one which may explain why it stopped working, sometimes it takes a few times before the ecm picks up a fault from it and takes away the spark.

Re: engine swap issue

it is in fact a D16a not B16 but im still under the impression its the crank sensor that caused the issue i have a slighly more experienced mechanic looking at that now
