Rep Power: 0 Code P0740 AT transmission
Alright. 98 Civic ex 4dr AT. bought this car 4 months ago and got my first cel code P0740 -Tourque Converter Solenoid Circuit. The tranny runs ok i guess. doesn't have any hard shifting and seems to shift fine. i did change the oil 3 tymes using oem honda lube. after upgrading my radiator i had to add a mishimoto trans cooler but it still runs at 180'. I drive about 75 miles per day and drive a 8 mile hill. yes, high mileage at 160,000. pulled the lock shift solenoid and it was clogged. cleaned it and reinstalled. reset the ecu and it ran fine for about 10 miles and it hasn't gone off til today. bad solenoid? bad tranny? need advice..thanks!

The torque converter solenoid operates the torque converter lockup, it may have just had a hiccup which can happen on rare occasions, monitor it and see if it comes back on, if it does then try to make a mental note of the conditions (uphill drive, hot trans fluid/engine, etc)

Thanks for the reply.
Took the car to the repair shop and found out my transmission needs an overhaul for $2600 or replacement. Can I replace a tranny from a d16y7 to my d16y8 w/ vtec? And what about any issues with the ecu and axles? I think the gear ratios are different except the 4th one but, please advise if I'm wrong. Is this an easy swap?

I would not be able to tell you but there may be some other ppl on here who know more about what trans fits what engine or of the si/non vtec trans are the same other than gear ratios. You should be able to find a low mileage one from a scrap yard for less than 800 though and just swap that in, I usually do not bother to rebuild automatics unless I can get the kit and do it myself, usually a lower mileage one is the cheaper option though.
