98 EX gear whine help please
98 EX gear whine help please
New to the forum and can really use some help. I have a 98 EX with 174000 miles. While coasting down and still in gear, I hear a pretty significant gear whine. If I push in the clutch, it goes away. It is more noticable in the lower gears. I guess it is possible that it is there while accelerating, but I don't hear it over the engine noise. There is also a metal tinging sound that reminds me of metal wind chimes. Again, I don't seem to notice it when the clutch is pushed in. I had the timing belt changed at about 155K, and the noise was there before I had that changed. Please help and thank you.
Re: 98 EX gear whine help please
do the simple checks, check the trans fluid level and change it if its never been done, also if it goes away when you depress the clutch there are 2 things which can cause that; 1) low fluid level and 2) worn pilot bearing a worn throw out bearing will be noisy when the clutch is deperessed and the worn pilot will be noisy with the clutch engaged. Either way check the fluid level first and go from there.
Re: 98 EX gear whine help please
I changed the transmission fluid after I noticed the noise but that did not seem to make a difference. I guess I need to see what a new pilot is going to do to me. Thanks
Re: 98 EX gear whine help please
can you get a video of it for me? or at least a sound clip, I may be able to help u nail it down a little better. fyi neew pilot bearing means that you are going to have to pull the transmission out so its just as well to do a new clutch and new throw out bearing, around 8-10hrs labor is what most shops will charge to do it for you.
