cooling problem

recently bought a 1996 civic cx in alberta, being winter the heat has been on high(red) setting since i bought it. however the weather has warmed up and i noticed when i turn the switch to cool(blue) the heat gauge starts to climb. would this be a thremostat problem? or does anyone else have any insight into this problem? thanks in advance.

Re: cooling problem

more than likely thermostat isnt opening as much as it should. also check the fans see if both are working (you can turn them on anytime by switching the a/c on). when the heater is on, it acts as a mini radiator to cool the engine since coolant is running thru the heater core with air blowing over it in the dash for heat.

Re: cooling problem

how high are we talking, above half? And yeah basically what was said by gearbox, the thermostat can be stuck closed, if it goes over halfways I would be looking at this as a suspect. On the bright side its easy to change.
