99 Civic Wheel Bearing Issues
99 Civic Wheel Bearing Issues
This has been the biggest wart of my DX.I had a 94 CX,put 190K without bearing replacement.
On this 99,@ 100K I put it on a wash rack, cleaned the underside with a waterhose, high pressure, high volume, flushed it good(did the same on the 94 no problems).I drive quite a few miles on dirt roads&lotsa mud.Within 2 months of the wash job my rear engine seal went out,and both front wheel bearings.Bought Japanese bearings from Advance, and now at 234K have done many replacements since.A Motor City brand Chinese bearing lasted 1 month, and have changet left side 4 times, right 2 times,on the right side I changed it in 7/07,and after 90K is strating to wear.I did the Chinese bearing on left in 7/10,30 days later it went out, then did a Japanese bearing, and now it`s out.
They always show water causing rust in bearing&fails.
I`m an expert at knowing when they go.1st,you hear&feel a little ratttle&looseness in front axle, next you will feel a slight play if you grab top of tire&pull&push with weight on tire.2nd,if you jack it up,you can later feel the play the same way with wheel off ground, later you hear rumble as it goes around curves.I`ve not had one to make any noticeable heat,or come close to total failure.
On my drive to work,I have 235 curves each way,and I haul butt.
I`ve just ordered Honda bearings to try this time.
Pain to install, you need a press&torch to cut the outer race out of hub, about 4 hours taking it across town to a press.
Anybody got any ideas??I torque the nut as per specs.I`m also not sure which side goes out,I just have to assume I looked at it the 1st time and did the same.the thin steel flange I put to the outside.
Regards,Dizz
