tranny problem

a few weeks ago my speedometer stopped working before the new sensor came in my problem has esculated. now it is hard to move the gear shifter at all. even when in neutral. its a 97 civic ex coupe 5 spd. i can get it in gear and the engine will rev up and the car will barely move. is the transmission gone?

Re: tranny problem

Try lubing your shifter ball. Pull up the center console and spray white lithium in there, or squeeze some grease in there if you have it in a tube.

If that doesnt work, pop the hood and locate where the shifter cables connect to the tranny and try moving them manually with your hand. If they dont move, try to disconnect them and try and see if they move (this tests to see if the tranny cables are the problem). If they still dont move freely, then you have a tranny problem on your hands.

Re: tranny problem

Yes you do. The cables connect your shifter, thats covered up by the center console, to your tranny and pass through your firewall. How else do you think your car shifts gears? Its all mechanical. There are 2 cables- one for moving the shifter forward and backward, and another one for left and right. This combo determines what gear your tranny shifts into.

Re: tranny problem

You do have shift cables, some people call them rods though on the older cars cause they are bars newer ones have just cables but basically the same thing. There are 2 of them just like he said. They go right under neath your car and go to the tranny. Get under there and check for clearance, have someone shift while looking at them, there could be a clearance issue.

Re: tranny problem

I just had the same problem; it wasnt the transmission thank god, the lube on the shifter ball just dried up and created lots of friction during the shifting motion and made me force it into gear which wasnt right. Just needed some lube.

Just so nobody is confused. It's bars but, they do the same thing. Just grease all the pivot points.
