Talking Which Civic? - First Purchase!

Hello everyone!

I'm planning on purchasing my first car and ive decided im going to get a civic. Now the problem is i dont know which generation/year civic i should get. Here is some information about my requirements/limits:

budget $2-3k
mileage under 300k
preferably a sedan
good HP, light on fuel

I read around that the older models tend to have more "oomph" than the '00 ones. And horsepower is a very important factor for me, acceleration is important when it comes to fuel, well in my opinion it does!

So any ideass???

THANKS!

Re: Which Civic? - First Purchase!

why you want a sedan?, they are heavier. get a coupe or a hatchback.

for the budget i think you can get a good 95-98 civic cx, or lx. if you want the horsepower get the DOHC engine, but if you wan to get fuel economy get SOHC engine, both kinds are really good engines with a lot of potential.
my honda has d-series engine(SOHC) and i really like it, but people always say to me swap the engine with a b-series engine(DOHC), but the d-series has a lot of potential i know you would not be able to beat a b-series but there is a lot of people who love the D-series and you could good competition.

good luck man.

Re: Which Civic? - First Purchase!

2 to 3k would get you a civic from 89-98 probably. But those wont have the horsepower that you are wanting since horsepower is important to you. 116 hp to the crank will be like the most you get from a stock civic in those yrs. The real power is in the later models of the civics especially the si's. Though the 99 si is a very powerful car. Plus acura has powerful motors since they are b series like the ls and gsr.

Re: Which Civic? - First Purchase!

You probably won't find a Civic with much power on your budget.Higher powered Civics showed up around year 2000.You might be able to find a 1999 Civic Si in your budget because there's this other guy on the forums.Got his '99 Si for $1900.Here's his thread https://www.civicforums.com/forums/4...-opinions.html

Re: Which Civic? - First Purchase!

Thanks for all the opinions! i really appreciate it.

i did realize that i dont think ill be needing a sedan and since coupes are lighter, why not!

ill probably be aiming for a 95-98 si and if i get lucky a 99 si with SOHC engine, and its also important to me that its VTEC! i know there are other good engines out there but its originally VTEC in those civics anyway so ya

i could actually settle for either SOHC or DOHC engines, any of those would be fine for me.

Thanks for the information! time to continue the search

Get a hatch, super fun. In my opinion the 92-95 ones look the best. Something like this: http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/1890138909.html

The 99 si is a DOHC not a SOHC. The 99 si has a b16a2 in it. And vtec isnt everything. I am going to swap a motor in my car that isnt vtec and be able to beat the new si's

oh sorry i didnt know that, my mistake! btw how much does it cost for a new engine? or at least the one your about to get? I wont have a lot of money leftover if i get a car and that will be used for gas/regular maintenance or whatever might come, thinking next summer ill save up for some extra parts/add-ons

but i think im gunna find myself a 99 si coupe! or try lol

Re: Which Civic? - First Purchase!

The motor that I am going to get is the k24a1 from the honda crv and they go for 600. Though if you want this swap in your car you have to have alot of things to swap it in. It works in my car cause I already have a k motor in my car so its a direct fit with no new ecu or nothing needed except for the passenger side mount from the crv. But the 99 si's go for bout 5 if you find one for 2 your are lucky as hell. But the em1's are very great cars and they have alot of potential.

The em1 is the 99 si. Em1 is the chassis code for it.

don't ask why, please, for you could be opening a can of worms, but not all VTEC are the same. Use the search function and read as much as you can, several threads around discussing it, but a SOHC engine VTEC is different from a DOHC VTEC engine, meaning the VTEC itself works in different ways.
So read and decide on the car, but the 99 Si is a good choice on that it is a DOHC VTEC.

Yeah, I would try to explain here, but since most of the threads ends up in a lot of fighting about how the system works, I suppose it is better for him in this case to find the other threads - just don't want to open the can of worms...
