Is dynamat worth it for SQ??
I know this has been talked about a lot but anyways..I just put a sub in my car and I do get rattle from the license plate which as we speak I'm laying brown bread or something like that on it. The trunk rattles but I'll try the DIY for that. My point is I don't think I'll have to much rattling other than that.
Is it worth it to sound deaden the trunk lid and maybe some of the inside of the trunk for sound quality/more bass. I remember reading somewhere you can get an extra 3db if you do this.
Thanks for your help

If you want the best possible environment in your car for SQ it is worth every bit of effort you put into it to make it quieter and to reduce resonances. So yes, the mat is worth it in my opinion.

i put 3 layers of fatmat in the trunk and all it did was stop the rattling, didnt really increase dB or anything but it did what i wanted it to do. maybe when i do the doors i will get a noticable difference.

i say that it is worth it, i hate being out walking around and hearing some moron with some thump and hearing that awful buzz of rattle trunk, it is a pest peeve of mine... i think it is worth every penny, plus, what do i care if it is quieter outside the car, i put in the system for me to hear and enjoy, why do i care if some punk walking down the street hears it or not?
We completely did an Audi TT (the trunk, doors, rear deck, under the headliner, ripped out the dash, did the firewall, the rear side panels, and under the hood.. there was almost a 5 dB gain... plus no more rattling.. there were very noticeable differences..
kind of a lot of work though

I just started laying down fat mat in my car today. All i did so far is the right door. I think i ended up using about 20 sq feet in the door. It does make a difference, in my opinion, granted it isn't anything remarkable, but it does make a difference. I've found that over the past few years everytime i go out and do anything new or different for my car, the more i have done, the more it takes to make it sound THAT much better, and next thing you know i'll be used to it and looking to upgrade something else.
But i guess that's why i like this hobby, that's what it is for me and i enjoyed sitting outside today in my driveway for 3 hours laying that stuff on every square inch of my door that i could manage

Just finished the other door. Yeah it works, yeah it makes my car sound better. I ended up using 50 sq feet total for both doors. Tonight after i finished the left door i opened up the right door again and put more in it. It sounds even better now that both doors are finished!!
Now what to do with the next 50 sq feet i have.......
What area does everyone think i should concentrate on? I know for sure i want to do my trunk lid, and i am going to put foam between my rear deck and the window.....is it really important to cover the rear deck too?? I'm thinking the last thing i might do is the sides around the trunk, would it be better to use what i got making sure the rear deck and lid are completely covered or should i save some for the sides of the trunk, i think that's what my question is.........

I completely Dynamatted my entire trunk lid in my civic, and helped the trunk rattle A LOT. stopping the license plate rattle is a little touger. Your best bet is to just bolt each of the 4 holes into the trunk, and lay a sheet of dynamat under the license plate. And don't worry if the dynamat comes out looking ghetto. ITS SUPPOSED TO especially with how the trunk of our car is designed. I just covered my trunk lid with a grey carpet and then covered that with a black carpet with the words civic cut out of it. Now you have a sick-looking soundproof trunk lid and all for under 60$!!!!!
I put about 4 layers of Fatmat in my trunk cuz' i bought 100 feet and then won an auction for the fatmat on this site about a year ago. I only had my subs for about 2 days before I received the first 100 feet for the trunk and the rear deck and it stopped a TON of the rattles. I didn't notice the dB because i was still breaking in my subs but it makes sense to me that it would make it a little louder. The main thing is that it will reduce the rattles enticing you to turn it up a lil' louder than b4.
oh yeah, and dynamat extreme works as good as 2 layers of Fatmat, but for the price you can put even more layers of fatmat than 2. Dynamat original is garbage and doesn't stick either and my friend bought some cheap mat off ebay and all it did was make his car smell like a fish before it peeled off. Fatmat and like 2 other brands work, one is called brown bread if i remember correctly and the other is RaamMat i think. I'm not sure on the names though.
