"peak power"
Hey,
I was just wondering how much i can "overshoot" my "peak power" by. I've noticed that many people power their components/subs way more than factory suggested "peak power". I currently have Alpine Type-R SPR-176A and I want them to be very loud without cracking up or losing quality. Alpine says their peak is 200watts, but I think i'd want to have them louder.
any suggestions/help would be nice
thx in advance

Dont pay attention to peak, it's the RMS that matters. If you gave those 200 watts RMS, they probably wouldent last too long, considering their RMS is 50 watts. I would say 100-125 watts would make those play at their maximum.
You shouldn't really overshoot your peak power at all unless you want to blow your stuff out. Peak Power is just a peak it can reach at like a short loud point in the song. Amps have a peak power too. RMS like Mystic said is what is important. Peak Power is just bull, they just put it there to make their stuff sound better to try to impress people, IMO.
At least that's what I've picked up so far in my findings...

It's possible to have better sound quality with a much more powerful amp, just as long as you have the gaisn set properly. The extra potential is just extra headroom so your amp doens't ever need to strain. More power can be better for sure.
i agree with ed, its nearly impossible to have too much power.
also, companies can lie. best example I cna think of, is the orion HCCA. rated for 600 rms, 1200 peak. my buddy is quite irresponsible with the volume know, and has yet to blow his hcca10 with a jbl1200.1
his enclosure is ported, to boot....
I would use rated powerhandling as more of a guideline, rather than a set line you cannot cross the shiva is another great example, which cna blow out rather easily with far less power than its rated to take, all you need to do is jump on the volume **** a bit....

Of course you should have an Amp that is rated more than the speakers or subwoofers for that matter. It will take more power to power the subwoofers getting those low frequencies as well.
If you didn't know, technically you can underpower a speaker and destroy it too so you have to be careful. A guy had some crap amp with nice powerful speakers and blew them out because the amp wasn't powerful enough...
