Need Help on ICE for friend

sorry to keep bugging you folks for audio help for all these people, but hey, it's making me some money... anyway, a friend of mine has an 01 mustang convertable, he is wanting to overhaul the entire system, and add a sub, has a stock cd changer and would like to keep it. the sizes are 5X7 in the fronts, and 6&1/2 in the rear... he also wants to replace the headunit... mainly listens to rock so he wants crisp clear highs, he's not really on a budget either... thanks in advance for your help

JL makes a 5x7 component set (part of the XR series I believe). You may also be able to 6 1/2 inch speakers in the 5x7 holes...I was able to do this in my girl's ride using an adapter that i bought at sounddomain.

If he is not on a budget maybe suggest getting a whole JL system (except for the HU). Some XR comp speakers, a 300.2 or a 300.4 amp, a 12W7 for the trunk, and a 1000.1 to with that. Then add pretty much any HU that has the features he wants. That would be an awesome set-up IMO. ...not being on a budget are the key words though!

how do you plan to keep the stock cd changer with an aftermarket HU?

I say get eclipse OR jl speakers on the inside
jl 10w7 on a 500/1 because that will be a lil cheaper because if you look around for the amp you can get it for around 300-400
and a jl amp for the speakers and you should be set
i know that eclipse and jl speakers both sound equally good so he cant lose with those two options

are you sure they are 6.5's in teh back? most modern fords are 5x7 all round....

but here is my vote. I totally second the XR components in the front. if he IS on a budget, i suggest the XR coaxials, they also sound REAL sweet and can be had for less than $200 on ebay.

XR coaxials in back for sure IF it turns out its a 5x7. otherwise, koda or peerless CSX. im not going ot say much abotu the CSX, becuase i havent bought some yet to play with, but they are supposed to have MADDDDD midbass. so does the koda, but unfortunately they ahve a fragile surround, so not a good speaker for this case. the DD's are paramountly awesome, and earthquake midwoofers as well, which also have great midbass and are freakign unblowable.

so im suggesting no tweeters in back, and even crossover work to ensure they play only midbass. you can get lowpass inline crossovers from parts express, my buddy has a set that are 2500 low pass filters, but if you could get some even lower, that might be more ideal.

http://www.speakercity.com/Peerless_files/csx165c.shtml

theres the peerless mids, the great thing abotu these, is that if he hates them, he only wasted $40 per driver! so thats a good deal no matter what!

i have to admit, the 10w7 is a SWEEEET speaker and fantastic rock performer as well, but maybe not the best in this case. is he a block rocker? does he plan on beating his speakers to death? does he want LOUD?

in that case, if he wants a 10, I would go with an HCCA 10. they are paramountly loud, and coupled with a jbl1200.1, will get louder than you could possibly imagine a dinky little 10 can get.

if he wants to go all teh way to a 12, then a brahma 12 is the way to go, sealed, and again coupled with a 1200.1 is a great value bottom end that will get incredibly loud, and nearly distortion free.

so, conclusion: my reccomendation:

XR components in front, 5x7
rear, either: RX 5x7 coaxials, or DD midbasses, or those peerless CSX's.
bottom end, HCCA10 or brahma12 on a jbl1200.1

if he has the money, get a better amplifier for the bottom, liek the new brutus. I would shy away form the newer zerus series amplifiers fmro hifonics, as they seem to have some heat issues, for a front stage amplifier, that is.

want to keep teh stock cd changer? keep the stock radio! thats yrou only option, and really a fine one. if he decides later, that he really needs an aftermarket deck, he can get that at that time, doesnt need ot worry about that this instant.

good luck!

thanks every one that replied, i was also just informed that the changer is not stock, it is aftermarket, he forgot that he got it after he bought the car... i gave him a couple of setups, not too sure which one he'll go with yet... i gave him one that was all JL, minus the HU and wiring, and a couple that were a mix of brands, that way he'd have options at a plethora of price ranges, so once he decided exactly how much or how little he wanted to spend, he'd have his options, all he really said as to how much he wanted to spend was less than what he paid for the car... the reason i gave him the all JL setup is because he hasn't yet decided if he cares whether it is all the same brand or not, he said give me options, so thats what i did...

go with jl
if i had 10 grand to spend on my system i would still pick jl because it sounds good and its quality and trust me, if you do anything make sure he gets that w7 on a 500/1 am because i KNOW for a fact that i a GREAT set up, my homeboy has that in his integra and he turns it up i have to get out the car cause it hurts my ears so much, but he also has a component set and some coaxials that are amped on a 300/2 jl amp
