Question Cruise Control LED...

Today I noticed a light was out on my cruise control switch. I then decided to try to take apart the switch. Well I found the 2 LEDs in the switch and the red one is burnt out. This LED is the type that screws in with a plastic base. Does anyone know where I could find this LED without getting raped buy the dealer??

I wish one of mine would burn out. The cruise light is bright as hell. It annoys the funk out of me while I'm driving at night. I actually put some electrical tape over the button. Now of I could just dim down the green cruise in the display.

If I'm not mistaken, what you think is an LED is actually a bulb... LEDs don't "burn out" like bulbs do. Is the screw in thing glass or plastic? LEDs are completely filled in plastic, where as bulbs have the regular filament. those bulbs should be easy enough to replace, radioshack might have them, if not try www.partsexpress.com they should have them for sure. Is the screw in light have the two wires bent around the screw in platsic base? If so I know what you're talking about, they have them all over my EP3, I'm planning on replacing those bulbs (not LEDS) with LEDs, probably blue ones. You can't just use LEDs because you need a resistor inline to regulate the load, and that gets a little confusing... I should be posting my DIY swapout of bulbs for LEDs on ephatch.com shortly, just found this forum. Bill

leds burn out like any bulb will, and alot more easily too, all you need a slightly too much voltage and pop!

and considering that green LED's only need 2ish volts to turn on.... (or is it 5? i think its 2 tho..)

I guess it is a bulb then. It has the wrapped wires around a plastic base.-Thanks and please post that DIY!

White Rabbit, Leds do burn out, though I was implying that not necessarily in the same fashion, I was trying to differentiate for the others that LEDs and filament based bulbs are different, and you can't just assume they're interchangeable. I think many people think LEDs are just high end light bulbs that are colored... when in fact they have characteristics which make them unsuitable for many applications, and definetly more tricky than regular light bulbs. Good LEDs are clear when off...

LEDs need different amounts of voltage depending on the color. The easier to manufacture LEDs like red, green, orange take a lower voltage drop, probably near 2v. The blue, white and purple ones need closer to 3-4 volts. Actually they have something called a voltage drop, so depending on the voltage drop you can only have so many in series... hence you need to know how many LEDs in the circuit tapping off a single 12v source. For example I had 4 blue LEDs tapped off a common 12v, with something like 100ohm resistors inline with each (all in series). However I could put 6 Red LEDs in series with like 100ohm resistors off a 12v circuit.

here is a great calculator for determining how many LEDs you can have in series, and the resistors you will need :
http://www.bit-tech.net/article/68/

I got all my LEDs for my projects from www.superbrightLEDs.com you can find replacement "wedge" type LEDs premade for our cars, and they have all the specs for the LEDs they sell that you would need to calculate resistors etc... They're pretty cheap, and much brighter LEDs than you can find at radioshack or other generic Electronic surplus stores. I'll be sure to post my results replacing the screw in type lamps with LEDs, the most important part of that will be determining whether the lighted circuit is series or paralell, and how everything goes together, which I'm in the process of doing now.
Best, Bill

Hey if you guys are looking to replace the LED I would steer clear of radio shack. I have tried them and their prices remind of buying performance parts at honda OVERPRICED, and limited selection.

Try checking online with companies like E-sonic (www.e-sonic.com) There are basically 2 set sizes of LEDs out there and the only different is the voltage needed to light them. You should check locally for a electronics store that specials in parts for builders. They carry all sorts of parts and can order almost anything you might need. This type of store will most certainly keep something in stock for you.

I would look at this at a chance for a DIY. changing the light or something. I wonder what it woud look like with electric blue or something?

If you guys have a problem with the brightness you can pick up a resistor and try that in line with the LED to reduce it. Any resistor from 220 ohm or 3700 ohm would probably dim it enough to make it bearable but still visible.

is it really worth saving 52 cents by buying an LED online?

You have to consider quality as well, you will not find super bright 6000 MCD (MicroCandelas) at radioshack. Good LEDs are clear when off, and When purchasing 30~ LEDs for a project (30x.52=15.30$) yes, it makes good sense. :-)

I'm sure you can get a replacement at any honda dealership, I am unaware of any aftermarket screw in replacements. I was just mentioning my endevear for others who might be interested.

Got my LEDs today... blue, white and red... can't decide! but the white ones are so pretty, grayish white... decisions decisions :-)

What color are the stock LEDs? I wanna make all the lights in my car pure white... Is that just a Red Film behind the console with white leds or is it red leds?

Read my DIY, there are only 3 LEDs in the console area, the rest (4) are bulbs. If you want white, you will have to swap the 3 LEDs to white like I did, and the 4 bulbs to LEDs. LEDs and bulbs are not interchangeable. It should be pretty well explained in my DIY. The gauges I have not done yet. I'll post my findings on the gauges when I get there. Bill

Are those bulbs red? I can get bulbs in any size that have to LED's on the end of them.... I have them for my parking lights - they are amazing - and it would save a lot of soilder time.

Are you asking if there are just screw in replacements for the bulbs in the console area? If there are I am unaware of them. However I did buy some wedge type LEDs from superbrightleds.com for like 1.50 a piece, both white and blue to replace all my interior lights, driving lights, and I got a "festoon bulb" LED for the back dome light.

See here: http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm

I'm not sure if any of those are applicable. I have bought the "single LED Wedge Base Bulbs" for my driving lights, and the "4 LED wedge Base Bulbs" which are both replacements for 194s, on basically every interior light, and my license plate.
