replacing subs.. couple of questions
Hey everyone,
I currently have three 10" audiobahn subs (in that bandpass enclosure with the plexy glass and the neon light tube thingy) hooked up to one 1000watt sony amp. During the summer, I want to replace these with three 10" Alpine Type-R's. I would like to use the same box. But since the Alpine Type-R's are DVCs, would I have to get more amps to power them?? (I will be getting a different amp). All i want to know is if I'm going to need more than one amp to power them / if i have to add new speaker terminals to the box.
Thanks in advance

the loading will work if and only if your woofers have the same load as the audiobahns.
for example. if the audiobahns are 4 ohm SVC speakers, you will want 2 ohm DVC type R's to replace them with, as you can wire each one as its own 4 ohm load, just liek the AB.
if yrou AB's are 6 ohm DVC, or 6 ohm SVC< like I suspect they are, no Type R will carry that kind of load, and youll be SOL.
but since thatamplifier is 1 ohm stable (right?) id reccommend getting the dual 2 ohm type R's. you can wire each on into a 4 ohm load, then wire yoru three 4 ohm loads together for a 1.33333 ohm load, as close as you cna get to 1 ohm with three woofers of standard impedance like the type R.
And ludlam is right, id worry about not having a flat frequency response and having a sloppy or boomy response as well runnign type R's in that box.
you jsut cant predict how those woofers will mesh with that box. might work, but id bet that it wont....
