yea thats what it says.. but honestly... unless you have a hatch... the sealed box is gonna sound better IMO... i tried both in my car and i have a 13 inch W7... i ended up buyin the factory sealed box cause it hit harder and sounded clearer.... check out my members rides photo's to see it.. but thats just my 2 cents .

Hey, I am fixing to go off to college and I have a JLw3 with a ported box, built exactly to spec on the JL site. I need all the trunk space I can get and the built to spec ported box is huge. If I get an enclosed box, I know it will be smaller, which is what im going for, but will I really hear a difference compared to my ported box?

theoretically, and realistically, if you build both the ported and sealed box to spec, with equal power the ported box should be louder. if it isnt, theres something wrong. and no, 4 inch port isnt big, white rabbit's port i think is like 15 or something inches wide...

you can make your port diameter smaller as long as you increase the length. The value being used is the mass of air inside the port. You could have a 1" port but it'd prolly be 30' long, lol. I have 2 -12" 12W3's in a ported box and I love'em!!

www.JLaudio.com, check out port tutorials.

the bigger the port the better, up to something like 75% of Sd or so. realiztically, youll never get there.

4" for a single 12 is a good size definitely, not nearly reaching the max ideal size, but at the same time, not TOO too small.

Tbone, might wanna check out the tutorial too, wen you decrease port area, you actually make the port length smaller to achieve the same tuning frequency!

so a 1" port would actually take up next to no room at all, and make the box a whole lot smaller! (gross volume would decrease as port volume decreases) but with such a small port, port noise becomes a huge issue, which id bet was the primary factor in that 13w7 install going awry.....

its always a battle tho, between port noise and idealistic volume

I stand corrected Rabbit. I, myself, have never built a ported box and was goin off information that I have heard in the past. My area of expertise is electronics, not acoustics, I will leave this to the pros, lol.
