I should be getting the carpet that I ordered for my box in the mail today...
Is there any advice that anyone thinks I should know before I start on carpeting my box? Is there any specific technique or anything like that. How do I do the sides without wrapping my box like a gift; do I just cut slits?
These questions will prolly sound stupid to someone who has done this before

not at all, a well carpeted box is freaking hard!
a proper box carpet is very stretchy. when you get yoru carpet, give it a tug, you should be able ot easily warp the fabric....this will be important later!.
there are 2 ways to carpet a box. (im sur ethere are more, 2 STANDARD ways) seamless, and seam. I will go through seamless because its always the more desireable way to carpet a box based entirely on aesthetics.
A seamless box is defined by having NO cuts at all, and 5 sides fully carpeted. depending on your box shape, you can use the baffle as the 6th side and actually fully carpet the box! no seams! thats rare to have such a shape however (usually for truck style boxes) so I will go over the standard way to do it.
you cna really start on any side you wish, but realize that you have to stretch the carpet. so if you have a box that is 12x6x30 inches, you dont want to carpet a 12x6 panel first! rule of thumb (and not always always always true) is that you will want to start on teh side opposite the one side that will not be seen (in our cars, that will most likely be the bottom). so lets say we are carpeting a prefab style boxes for 2 12's:
I would start by spraying adhesive on both the box and the carpet. make sure you spray the right side! carpet will have 2 side, the face and the backside. you dont want to caret with the backside facing out!
after waiting as long as the directions tell me to (anywhere form 20 minutes to immediately) I place the top of the box onto the carpet, which is laying belly up on the floor. ill pick a side, usually the baffle, and spray again, both teh carpet and the baffle. i will go extra heavy on teh corners, and on teh carpet the cornrs will stick out 45 degrees from teh corner, not directly out in either direction.
when I am ready to apply the pieces, i literally stand on teh box, and grab one corner. I then tug on it, stretching that section of carpet as much as I possibly can, then I apply it to that edge of the box. its contact cement, so it should bond instantly. I then do the same to the other side, then ill stretch teh center out a bit, whatever it takes to get in between the sides to have no wrinkles.
box carpet should be VERY stretchy remember!
from here, its up to your own discretion whether you do the sides or the back next, it really depends on how much youve stretched the carpet thus far, you can try to lay up the carpet a bit onto the back and sides to see where most of yrou play is gonna be. remember you want to have NO creases till you get to teh bottom of the box!
but basically you follow the same procedure for the rest of the box, you can spray 2 sides at once if you wish, oing a side then half the back, then spraying the other side to get all teh adhesive in there, its kinda open at this point!
when you get to teh bottom, spray all the way around the MDF and carpet, ut jsut a couple inches in, you wont be carpeting the whole panel. overspray is just fine.
then lay on teh carpet, at this point, wrinkles and creases arent TOO critical, so dont break yoru back over them, but the fact remains the fewer of them you have, the less knife work you have later.
then simply grab yrou knife and cut an inch and a half in so the bottom panel is blank MDF with a inch and a half or so border of carpet. this can be an inch, half in, three inches, it doesnt relaly matter.
at this point too, youll cut all yoru creases on teh bottom, no point in having the box not sit exactly flat or anything cause a crease rases one side of the box up a fraction of an inch....
at this point you can cut out teh circle, too, just hold it perfectly flush to the hole and run it in a circle, if you have a super sharp blade (you know those boxes with like 100 disposable blades in them?) itll cut it like butter and youll be set.
done! yoru box has been carpeted. or vinyled

1.
Start by placing the carpet in the middle of the bottom of the box and have one side with an inch over hang.
2.
Use some thumb tacks or a staple gun to hald it in place.
3.
Now put the bottom of box on the ground.
4.
Spray the front or back of box.
5.
Spray the area of carpet lightly ( adhesive can soak throught and ruin carpet ) that you will adhese to the box. ( beware of overspray getting on the carpet! )
6.
pull carpet tight, and have someone rub carpet against box.
7.
Continue for the other side except left and right end of box.
8.
once back to the bottom pull out the staples or thumb tacks. and adhese that peice.
Then cut other peice to fit that.
9.
Trim the extra carpert and trim the other side to have an inche over haneg like the other.
10.
with the inch over hang on both ends, slit the corners on both sides to make flaps.
11.
adhese one flap down.
12.
now trim ends of flaps to match up without over laying each other. and then adhese them.
13.
repeat on other side.
14.
Now with the extra carpet to trimmed off earlier cut a shape that will fit the uncarpeted end of the box and adhese them by spraying the back of the carpet. Then place on box.
15.
Use a steak knife to cut the circle for the speakers. just follow the cut circle hole of the wood. the speaker will cover it up.
Done!

So where do you guys get your stretchy box carpet? And has anyone found a manufacturer/color combindation that is a good match for the stock dark charcoal carpet in our trunks?

I just bought the carpet from Sounddomain.com. I got the charcol color, so it looks like it is gonna match the factory interior. I prolly overpaid, but whatever.
I did try to carpet my box last night...and I wasn't very successful at making my box seamless
, but it still came out looking pretty nice
I don't think I have the skills yet to seamlessly carpet a carpet. The carpet was pretty stretchy, but I couldn't do it right. So, I did it with seams. I just made flaps on all the corners as if I was wrapping a gift. I then cut the flaps off later (cutting as close as I could to the corner), but I made sure that the edges were glued really well. It actually looks pretty good for a first time, but there are a few bad spots...but no airbubbles or flaps, except for one of the seamless corners where there is a lil bit of lose carpet on the corner(but it isn't that bad looking). I also had one corner that came off so I had to reglue it and the carpet kept getting stuck on my hand. So I got glue all over the outside of the corner, but it is a back corner that no one will see.
I think box carpeting is one of those things that you have to see someone else do first in order to do it right the first time...but I guess that goes for box building in general.

"do you carry 'trunkliner'? no? thank you very much."
till one said "yes we do, in black and charcoal"
trunkliner isnt boxcarpet perse, but you can think of it like THIN box carpet. its the same stretchy material, but half the price and maybe a little les than half as thick. and probably easier to stretch.
so if youve got a wierd or complex shape to carpet, trunkliner might be the way to go anyways!
but thats where I get my stuff. but beware, trunkliner its VERY hard to tell which side is the face and which side is the backing! box carpet its IMMEDIATELY apparent....
unfortunately, i cant tell you for sure about the 7th gen, but this is a 6th gen HX< same carpet store, the charcoal stuff:
you can see its kinda lighter, but really the best way to do it is to find yrou source, then jsut drive right up and pull yrou trunk floor carpet out and bring it in to see.

WR, thanks for the info. I'm building a custome fiberglass speaker encloser into 1 side of the trunk and an amp/accessory rack into the other, so there shouldn't be too many complex shapes, except the concave section for the trunk hinges.
BTW, where about are you in SLO, Cal Poly is my Alma Mater. Graduated in summer 2000. Phi Sigma Kappa.

bwahaha, they will NEVER finish that! the DID however add a speedbump, casue everyone always sped over teh bridge, and would get real slick when it rained, so a bunch of people crumpled their bumpers.... >;p
this is a really good threat. i thik the sources for the carpet might wanna be added to the sticky DIY just because they go together.
awesome wrap up WR, i was needing this cuz once i have a couple of bucks saved up i will be getting myself some materials to build my box :-D
again, great wrap ups!!!
