Blew Out JL Speakers, HELP!
Hey everyone, I have been having a really bad day today. I got home and washed my civic and afterwards I went for a drive listening to my brand new JL Audio XR component set running off my Hifonics ZX6000. Well, im driving and all of a sudden my 6.5" mids just cut out, and all im listening too are my tweeters and my JL 12w3. So I take off the door panel and take out the speakers. One of my speakers, the polyurathane is detached from the voice coils and the other looks fine, but since it doesn't work and it is pretty damp inside the door panel, I conclude that both have water damage. That really pisses me off. Now they wern't saturated, so I was wondering if I take them into a car audio place that repairs speakers, can these be repaired? So anyway, I still have my OEM speakers so I go ahead and put those back into the doors, run off my amp. I guess I should have just plugged them back directly into the HU because when I am driving around later on, I smell something weird and then those speakers stop working. So now im just left with tweeters. I would really appreciate you alls help on whether my speakers can be repaired. If they can't, then are there any types of speakers that aren't expensive that can replace my 6.5" speakers and will sound good?

waterdamage??? hmmm... was the amp's gain set to high, i dont think just by washing your car they would get water damage, ive got mine in my doors, and wash my car twice a week. You could, get a set of Q-forms and put them in kicks, if you dont want them in the doors
or it might have been a bad set of speakers, that wernt built well

the polyurethane was detatched from teh voice coils? i dont think i fully understand what damage has occurred here....
but properly tuned, that set can take 150 rms all day......
and speakers properly installed should be able to take a bit fo water on them from time to time......

I got them off ebay for one so I don't think they have a warranty. Secondly, both of them look virutally fine. I took off the cap on the magnet for the drivers side speaker and there was water in it. The other one looks fine and had no water on it when I took it out of the door. My amplifier can push them up to 150w@4ohm which is the maximum power rating for the speakers, so I don't think I blew them out. I didn't have them playing extremely loud at the time, and when they were playing, they sounded fine until both just started to sound really messy and then just stopped playing. The one with the water in the cap makes a grinding sound when you push the polyurathane down as it normally would move when playing music. The level is about half way up on my amplifier and I don't think they were even getting enough power to get blown out.
polyurethane? are you talking abotu the dustcap? the cone? the surround? the spider? the basket? the magnet? i have no idea what you are trying ot say. polyurethane isnt a speaker component.
ar eyou trying to say that there is a grinding noise when you push on the cone? there are 2 causes of this.
#1 you bottomed out yoru speaker, smashing the former on the backplate. i dont htink this happened, because you said you werent playing them loudly
#2 you delaminated the coil, and bits of coil got caught up between teh former and the gap. I think this is the likely cause, especially if you had water inside the speaker.
but you have no warrantee with those speakers. and if you send them to JL for repair, they will try to trace the number adn find out you didnt buy them retail.
i think you are SOL on this one, im sorry to say.
