Positive and Negative?
So i put in my new speakers, and i noticed something werid. No matter which wire i connected to the speakers, sound still came out fine. I switched back and forth not knowing which wire was postive and which was negative. It didnt even sound different. Anyone know why that is?I think when i have some free time ill make sure to connect them correctly just in case. But still it was kinda strange, anyone else find this?
It makes perfect sense that it does. Since it's alternating current, it's going back and forth, and all that the voice coils do is make the cone go forward and backwrd, making the cone vibrate the air to make noise. it'sjust like your wall current (AC), your appliances all work fine with the poer cable going either way (some plugs are polarized with one prong larger tha teh other, but that doesn't matter).
Physics man .....
A speaker moves in and out ..... and as it move current actually switches back and forth that fast. A speaker works by applying voltage one way (and the speaker goes out) ... then applying voltage in the reverse (and it comes back in).
Even though the speaker has a + and - it really makes no difference in sound which way you hook it up.
Where it does matter is when you are using more than one speaker in a system (which is basically everyone now). This is where the term in phase comes in. For the best sound you want all speakers moving out or in at the same time. If they are not coordinated together you get cancellation of the highs and the bass isn't as strong.
Here's an analogy. Consider your subs as hammers trying to break some concrete. The best results will be from them both hitting together at the same exact time although both can work perfectly fine alone. Same with speakers. Working together the bass adds together. Working opposite one another its like you just have one sub hitting at a time.
So technically speaking ..... wiring it either way won't hurt the speaker or affect the sound each speaker itself makes ..... but it will affect the resulting sound the system as a whole produces.
Understand ?
