swapped head unit: AM now dead

I recently had pacific stereo in woodland hills put in a new alpine 7874 unit and the AM doesn't work. they said there is an incompatibility with the unit and the civic antenna. WTF? are they soaking me? anybody else have a problem like this? I'll take any suggestions. merry christmas.

I don't seem why it wouldn't work. It sounds like they f-d something up and just don't want to take the blame for it. If you have a good friend who's a audio guru get him to take a look at it. Even if AM still won't work.......so now you can't listen to college football games while you're driving down the road?

Check the wiring adapter they used. There is probably one wire from the Honda side that isn't connected to anything (I forget the color-red/yellow or something like that.) That wire must be connected to the blue power antenna wire from your new radio! It supplies the power for the antenna amp. Without that connected, FM will be bad and AM will be zilch. I had the same problem with mine- no reception. I spliced in a jumper wire to the blue wire then reception was great. Most wiring adapters i've seen for this car don't have a connection for that blue wire because technically they don't have a power antenna- but it is! I guess no one told the manufacturers of the wiring adapters. Most installers don't seem to know about it either judging from the bad reception complaints in this forum when replacing the head units.

the stock wire for the amplified antenna is yellow/green. most harnesses do not have the wire, so you have to hardwire it.

I've installed several HU's in several different cars and i never knew about the yellow/green wire in my civic being for the antennae amp until a few months ago. I STILL haven't gotten around to wiring that wire to my remote wire, probably because the ONLY time i listen to AM is when i am driving home from work monday nights in the fall and want to listen to the game before i get home to see the 4th quarter on TV. LAst season i'd bring a battery powered radio from my house to sit in the front seat to listen to the game....funny thing was, i couldn't get reception on the battery powered radio unless my HU was turned off, i guess my stereo gives out some unwanted intereference that the old crappy battery powered radio couldn't handle, turn my stereo off and i could hear the radio loud and clear, theis radio by the way is about 14 yrs old, but it still works in my bathroom when i take a shower.
