Width of box?
Trying to make a box that was form fitting to the countours of my trunk, a friend suggested I get that really thin, almost card-board like wood, and dampen it, bend it how I need it, clamp it, and let it sit till it conforms. I, however, was under the impression that most people use plywood, which is of considerably more thickness. This stuff we're talking about is about 1/4 in. I know nothing about boxes, so gurus, is this guy full of it, or does he have somethin here?

if your talkin about a custom trunk. most of the time they just build a frame out of 2x4's and some smaller sizes then stretch flece and staple it to the frame, then they start to pour fiberglass, and building it up.
the idea is to get zero pressure change during use. if you can design a box that is .005 inches thick and has zero flex (berellium comes to mind ) then your set! if your box is made of 2 inch thick MDF and it STILL flexes, then despite its 2 inch thickness, its no good.
if you can get no flex with 1/4 inch panels (you wont) then its all good.
what this design your talking about is good for is maximising usable space. once your wood has been bent to shape, you add the fiberglass and start to build up the structure. easier to get teh base down and can even screw into it, I can see many advantages over a full fiberglass box, for sure.
if your friends have the knowledge to do that (something i wish i knew how to do) id almost look into it on principle, if i wasnt going to flat out use that knowledge to build a box.
