Battery Voltage

Does anyone know how many volts our battery put out? I want to know how many watts my amp is putting out. I just assumed we are running low to mid 13's.

I got a MTX 6500D, with a 4 ohm configuration, which puts out:

12.5V
250 x 1 @ 4 ohms

14.4V
450 x 1 @ 4 ohms

So if it was in the 13's then it looks I'll be pushing around 350 watts which is not anywhere close to what I want.

Also, is there a voltage regulator on alternators that regulates the voltage into the battery from the alternator. I heard this from my friend who says the size of your alternator has no affect on your battery voltage due to this.

the battery 12.6-12.9 volts the alternator... 14.4 down..depending on the draw..probably more in the 13.6 volt range..

because their 12 volt rating is very conservative to begin with...

Bench one and see

you will be getting more power than what MTX rates the amp at

yeah MTX always grossly underrates their amps..(except the road thunder series whicha re garbage lol)..

MTX6500D's are rated for 750 at 14.4 volts..but most put out close to 900Wrms... the 81000d's put out in the 1400 watt area...

usually about 10-15% over their 14 volt ratings

me..yeah..and amp draw under different loads....but I have a 160amp alternator so it's a bit different...

with 1600Wrms of amp power, all accessories on, engine idling I dropped to 13.4 volts and drew 131amps playing 50,1000,and 5000hz tones overlapped at my speakers distortioned limit

I was hitting some 151.8 db's on a linear X jr PC mic ... not THAT loud...but it hurt like hell to sit in the car (sinus pressure..testicular rattling..seriously..)

Thanks for all the responses!

With every MTX amp there comes a "Performance Certificate" and it's a test of that specific amp. MTX does this for all their amps and if it doesn't pass their tests then they don't ship it out for sale. My certificate says:

Test Voltage: 12.5V
4 ohm: Max power at 1% THD+N = 378WRMS
2 ohm: Max power at 1% THD+N = 556WRMS

Voltage makes a huge difference in MTX amps. Others not such a big difference. Depends on how they are built.

So if we are running around 13.6V then I should be pushing around 450 or so. Better than what I thought I was running.
