You should have some directions in your owner's manual for the amp. Briefly, from my limited experience this is what you do.
Turn you cd player up to 75-80% of its max volume. Increase the gain until the sound starts to clip (distort) and then back it up a notch. I just played with all my settings on my amp recently. I just experimented with different settings and such. It really made a huge difference in the sq.
Anyhow, I am sure Mohawk will correct me if what I have posted is wrong or dangerous.

75-80% volume is just an average, it really depends on the radio
in order to find out how high you turn it assuming that you arent running a headunit with 8 or 16 volt preouts, and assuming that your amps are decent amps and allow for a decent amount of voltage, you set the gain on your amps to 0, then turn up the radio until you get distortion... wont be very loud, but youll hear the distortion... whatever volume you get to, turn it down slightly, and thats what you set your gains at... me for example, my radio goes from 0 to 50 on the volume scale, i got distortion at 45-46, so i set my gains around 40-43

What I do is turn up the volume to 75% then adjust the gain until right before it distorts and that should be perfect.
Clipping and distortion are two different things. Clipping is something the amp does. Distortion comes from the speakers so pay attention to the distortion when you do this. You don't want your amp to clip.

gain matches your preamp volts on your deck. my default if you have a 2 volt preamp you set the gain to 2/3, if you have a 4.5volt and higher you set the gain all the way. just turn up your volume till it distort then adjust your gain
Here is a link to the best info. I have ever read on setting gains... http://totoro.efiregate.net Make sure to download the 2 cd test tones... I am gonna se if I can rent a scope to set mine properly, too expensive to buy.
Turning the volume up and adjusting the gain works very well but as a Rockford tech we recomend matching the gain to the output voltage of your headunit. You always want to use more volume from your headunit than gain from your amp. The gain **** only there to get the output you want from lower voltage decks. What is the output voltage of your deck?
