alpine cda-7894 problem

sup, i just got my cda-7894 installed at circuit city, mainly b/c they had a deal on free xm installation so i figured i might as well.....well i can't see the display during the night time (yes i kno it is partially the way the car is designed). Well here is where it gets funny, while my mom was driving my car, she said the head unit all of a sudden got real bright to where she could see it fine for about 30 secs. then it went away. Then she said it happened again a little bit later.

so i looked under the hood (im not real good with wiring so i could be wrong) but it didnt look like they connected it directly to the "+" terminal on the battery like the alpine must be connected, or it will short out eventually b/c i am using the internal amp.

do u think that could be the solution to my display problems???

any thoughts would be great.

thanks

Well, the connection the battery terminal should have nothing to do with that. I'm assuming that your HU is always on, only the brightness of the display changes. It's probably the connection with the dimming wire behind your HU.

Do you always drive with your headlights on?

I have the 7893 and it is also supposed to be hooked directly to the battery but its not and it works fine. But on the 7894 theres a blackout function to where u can turn off the display to "reduce power consumption" maybe this is something u can check into.

It doesn't need to be direct to the battery, you should be fine, something else is up

well if u are using the internal amp, the direct connection to the batter is a good idea......i dont want to risk anything happening to it.........what do yall think the problem could be, i kno part of it is the car, but i cant see a thing.....i kno it is supposed to be brighter than it is right now

my thoughts on the subject: my HU is hooked up to the illumination on the car, as should they all be, so when you turn the little **** by the gauges down to reduce the light from your gauges, the HU also dims... make sure that **** is all the way up, if not, make sure the illumination wire is hooked up correctly, or, it could be a defective HU

ummm....I don't know bout you, but I got a pioneer unit and there's a function called "dimmer" (i think thats's what it's called ) . This function works directly with the parking/head lights, so the headunit AUTOMATICALLY dims whenever you have your lights on. When your moms said that she temporarily saw the unit "nice n bright", she had probably just gotten in the car BEFORE turning the lights on. When she saw it bright again later, it was probably when she was turning the car off and had turned the headlights off. I am willing to BET that that's your problem. DAMN I'M GOOD!!! I should be a detective or something. You can thank me later by the way..... FATBOY *** < PIMPCIVIC

The Alpine 7893 and 7894 need a direct connection to the battery if you're running the internal amp due to its high current draw. That amp pumps out 27W RMS/60W MAX and it's one of the most powerful internal amp among all the units out there. The unit will run if you don't do it but you might run into problems like you described or blowning your panel fuses all day.

If they didn't run the direct cable for you just get an amp power kit and run the cable yourself. Even some of the "authorized" Alpine dealers don't do that when they install the 7893/94.

because he has his lights on at night, and the radio DIMS the display automatically. I don't think I could have been any more clear in my previous post
