box stuffing with cotton or fiber etc.
whats the point of stuffing the box? just curious on the good and bad points of it... im doing my custom trunk sub box tomorrow or tuesday so im curious if its necessary.... i dont know if the type of sub makes a difference, but if it does, then its 2 audiobahn aw1200x subs pushed now by a cheesy flea market amp with about 300 rms, but next month a jbl bp600.1 or 1200.1
the cotton looking stuff is polyfill. it runs for about a couple of bucks for a pound of it. you use about one pound of polyfill per cubic foot of space in the box and it will slow down the sound waves making it seem as if the box is bigger. i dont know if actual cotton or anything similar will have the same effect. it helps alot with truck wedge style boxes because of the small and tight enclosure, but it also works well with hatch style or normal boxes.
btw, how is the layout of your trunk going to look? i am also considering a custom setup but i dont want to pay a shop to do it. a local audio shop wants to charge $480! their work quality is pretty good, i saw it in my friends car, he bought the car used already with the custom system. i dont have alot of time to experiment and do trial and error on my car, so i really dont want to jump into the project unless im sure that it will work.

ah hah... i've read in the past of people using polyfill, fiberfill, cotton, or even pillow stuffing.... i'm assuming its all the same...
about the trunk, if you go to the DIY section, theres a DIY sub box using the spare tire well, you can remount the tire under the car. my trunk is gonna be a modified version of that one... i need different box dimensions so the floor of the trunk is gonna be raised 3.75 inches instead of the .75 raise in that plan... i think im gonna also make a spiffy little storage space on one side for the jack and another little storage compartment on the other side for other random stuff so it doesnt fly around the trunk and land on my subs.. let me know how many cubes of space you need and i can give you some modified measurements and such... by the way, i'm using mdf not fiberglass... all the stuff to do it is bought... 30 bucks

Is one suppose to use fiberfill in a ported enclosure? I'm almost positive you are suppose to. I had it in my ported box and I had to use a staple gun to keep it down, so it wouldn't keep spitting little pieces of fiber out the port . Is that alright?

Actually, I hear that it might be a better idea if you were to staple a peice of chicken wire in front of the port.
The polyfill (or whatever) 'tricks' the box into thinking the air in the box is more dense (read: bigger box). The effect would be the same if we filled the box with argon gas (more density than nitrogen). A few years back I was thinking of building an argon gas filled box so it wouldn't take up too much trunk space. eh, polyfill is much easier to keep inside the box. I know, this is an old thread.... But, I have the same question again. I'm not sure there was a direct answer. If I built a vented box a little smaller, would putting polyfill in help make it seem larger?

ed, fiberfill in a ported enclosure is actually REALLY effective, check this out:

Joanne's is a good place to get polyfill...but it is a lil pricey there...also a good place to meet chicks if you are single...damn, this is an oooollllllld thread.
also, if i have a box already, can i just stuff it w/ this polyfill stuff in the vent w/o taking it apart? are there any risks that the polyfill catches on fire if it gets stuck in the wires (my trunk gets pretty warm sometimes b/c of all the heat of the amps)

poly fill won't conduct electricity, don't worry about fire there. only way that could happen would be if there was arcing on a loose connection, and this stuff would just melt.
i got 20oz polyfill for $4 at joannes. maybe thats above the going rate but i don't stuff many teddy bears
the rule is supposed to be 24oz per cubic foot. you could put it down the vent, but you want the stuff fairly well dispersed (if it is in one big clump, it will make your box smaller rather than work its magic)

would it be better if i just take apart my box and stuff, then reglue? i never did this, and would the wood crack wrong if i pry it open? if its risky, i might as well stuff it w/ a clotheshanger
also, since i might not be able to stuff it all the way in, how "dense" should the filler be?
sorry for so many q's, even tho this thread is old, this is the first tim ei've heard of such technique

if you really want, just rip open some unused pillows and use the stuffing in them. as to ported boxes, teh most effective way is to staple it to the walls of the box, otherwise youll have fuzz flying out of the box on a regular basis
i got mine at walmart. i got the fiberfill batting. it comes in quilt like sheets. i cut it to size, sprayed the box w/glue and stuffed that junk in there. after a day i pulled at the stuffing so it wasn't quite so compact... i really need to get my scanner up and working, so i can post that box building diy...

i used to have a resonance coming from my box before i polyfilled. mine's about an inch thick. i'm not sure if it was the polyfill, the spray glue, or a combination of the both, but the resonance is gone.

i think polyfill helped me. some people don't.
i think capacitors under 5 farads are completely worthless. some people think they are great. point is it's cheap and really won't do any harm. should help cool the sub if not improve sound.
