Pioneer remote installed
Pioneer remote installed
Those of you using the new remote-capable Pioneer head units might be interested in the steering wheel remote model CD-SR80. It was a breeze to install, and it works great with my 6400 (it's supposed to be a "universal" remote for the new Pioneer line). I can post a pic later, if desired.
I don't understand why all these manufacturers (Pioneer included) are bundling regular card remotes with their head units. What good does it do to have a remote if you have to take your eyes off the road to hunt for it? Oh, well...just my two cents... Anyway, the remote is available from Crutchfield for 39.99. I had one of those, but it didn't work cause it has to be in the line of sight to be picked up by the headunit. I couldn't put it on the right side of the wheel because the cruise control was there. I couldn't put it on the left side, cause it was too far away (not in the line of sight). So now I just use the card remote.

Yes, that's true about the line-of-sight limitation; I tested it in several positions before I determined that it would only work if mounted on the right side, and since the cruise control is installed in the lower right quadrant, I was left with only the upper right quadrant of the steering wheel as a mounting location. My old Aiwa was like that, too. One advantage of the Kenwood steering wheel remote is that the transmitting lens is on a wire, which allows the controller itself to be mounted anywhere on the wheel. Ah, well...
Well, I guess I spoke too soon about how great the remote was. It has started working only intermittently, and there does not seem to be any pattern -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I thought it might have been the battery, but even with a fresh one installed, it still only functions when it wants to. Drag. Oh, well...thank goodness Crutchfield is great with returns. Just keep the card remote in the little square thingy behind the shifter. If you know the remote as you should you don't take your eyes off the road, you can feel your way to the button you want.
Although I don't see the point of reaching for a remote when the HU is the same distance away

the remote is for when you are changing radio stations....that way you won't run off the road trying to look at the radio..... maybe it was just meant to be used for girls.....
