I don't know about Alpine, but I love my Pioneer DEH-P6400. I haven't even hooked up my amp or sub yet, and a friend of mine (a big Boston Acoustics fan) commented about how good the sound was with just the head unit running the front 6.5's (Pioneer 1667's). Good name brands are fine, but concern yourself with specs like signal to noise ratio, rms wattage, rca voltage output. Find one that has the features you want in your price range.

But, don't only look at those specs, the Sony i bought had very good specs and a lot of extras on it all for a good price, but i've come to regret buyign a sony, it skips on every cd on every crack and even doesn't play come cds and gives me an error. if you can, try talk to people who's owned the HU just go get an idea of what you're getting into.

I had a Pioneer HU in my truck and bought a new alpine when i bought my civic. The pioneer was the older DEH-P7200 with the Organic Display and my Alpine is the new 7993. I think both are prett good models. As for as performance goes I would have to say they both performed really well, never had a cd skip on me unless it was major scratched, and both make my highs sound pretty good even without an amp. The Alpine I have has the built in amp so it gets a bit louder. Cosmetically i would have to say i rathered the Pioneer but only because of the organic Display, if not for that it would be the Alpine. But if i could only have a choice of 1 I would take the Alpine.
