New Civic - need suggestions for system!
I am new here, just picked up my new 02 civic LX coupe last friday. After 3 different days, 4-5 hours each day (or so it seemed) I have installed my car stereo that I have had for a while in different cars. My setup is:
Sony ES cdx860 HU
BA Pro 5.5 mounted in the doors on custom wood spacers (tweeters located in stock kickpanels on velcro for mounting options right now)
a ESX 175.2 amp powers the Boston pros (175x2)
JL audio 10w3 powered by a small Alpine V12 (I *think* 25x2 bridged).
It sounds pretty good, but it doesn't sound as good as it did when it was installed in the last car it was in (99prelude). I think it has a lot to do with the rear speakers as the stock rear speakers in the prelude filled in a lot of the midbass that the door speakers leave out. So there are two things I am looking to upgrade...
Rear speakers - What would someone recommend to help fill in midbass without harsh highs that will kill soundstage and imaging? I suppose this would run off the head unit. Someone suggested midbass drivers instead of 6x9s... any thoughts? What midbass drivers would be ideal? Image dynamics? Would something like that work off the head unit or would I have to pump some power to them? Any midbass drivers that would work well with a HU?
Sub - My little amp just doesn't cut it. But I have also thought about going to two 10w3s and getting a ~500 or so watt amp to power them. But I am NOT looking for a bassmobile, sound quality and ONLY soundquality is my concern. I want the sub to blend in perfectly with the front sound stage, with no dectection of direction (crossed at 99hz right now). But as it is, the sub setup does not have the *kick* that I would like from the kickdrum type sounds and it doesn't have the volume to hang with the bostons at higher levles. Would a ~250 watt amp power my sub and give my desired results or should I just go to 2 10w3s and have the spare power as needed...?
Let me know what you think! Thanks..

Hmm,
Okay, Well the BA Pro's have amazingly detailed midbass. But not very powerful there. The tweeters are a tad harsh, I Hop you have them set at -2db's on the crossover?. Subwoofer wise. Why not get a Boston Pro series series sub and feed it a healthy 500+ Watts?. Those subs are not SPL monsters but they are by far about the best sounding sub there is. But they're power hungry and Not the loudest. The BA Pro 12.5LF would seem to suit your needs a bit more.
For your Midbass problem. Year speakers would broaden and pull back your sound stage a little too much for a good sound quality setup. a JBL 600.1 can be had for $185 on Ebay the BA Pro 12.5 for about $275 at a shop if you bring cash. Make sure you get the 2ohm version.
For your Midbass, of you're planning on getting a seperate amp for then I'd suggesy Low-passing tham at 400Hz that way your sound staging isn;'t really affected...
Cheers

I just got my Boston Pro's installed this week, Get the 4ohm subs if you plan on adding more amps later on, I don't know if you have memphis amps where you live but I have a memphis st500d pushing both 12's, sounds awesome, I wasn't looking for a bassmobile so they tuned it more for sound quality and it blends nicely. If you don't go with memphis, go with the pioneer premiere 720....it's sweet!

Thanks for the replys, but...
I am getting very minimal midbass, if any from the bostons mounted in the doors. Putting the tweeters in the kickpanels allows for EXCELLENT imaging but I wonder what could be done to get better sound from the woofers mounted in the doors. I have decided to leave the rear deck alone because fading the music towards the back even a little absolutely "destroys" the imaging. So I have to figure out how to get midbass from the door speakers, but I am not sure if that is going to happen.
As far as the sub goes, I just don't want to spend $300 for a sub+ $$ for a box at this time. The 10w3 sounds good enough for now except it definately needs more power. Any suggestions on a low priced, *CLEAN* amp that can put out 250 watts. I may get a bigger amp in case I do decide to upgrade to the BA sub down the road though...

Have you thoutoghly soundeadened the doors.. this will drasitcally improve midbass..So amp choices, shop around online. US acoustics, and Kenwood make some decent low cost amps that won't set your car on fire
