confused girl... ;)

i know this has probably been discussed a million times, but i did a search and i couldn't find the answer. i just picked up my 2002 civic on monday, and i want to replace the factory head unit with my own, as well as hook up my amp and speakers. as of right now, i am leasing the car (although i plan on buying it at the end), so i am afraid to f**k with it. the dealership told me that the stock head unit is connected to some security feature where my car will shut down, or something similar to that which will end up costing me a ton of $$$$$. basically, i just want to know how easy it is to do, what dangers i might run into, and, in your expert opinions, would you advise doing it???

thanks a lot!

The dealership lied to you. The HU is pretty simple to take out and put a new one in its place. I did mine and everything works perfectly. I did blow a fuse though and had to replace it so that my power locks and stuff would work, but that's my fault for not removing the negative cable on the battery.

Yeah, Just do what he said, I think it was back for the 96 model year that they had some of the security features connected to the HU, but they changed that right away. Many of us have sucessfully (Like UncleB said, remove the negative, i know i forgot to do that) changed out HUs

thanks for the help, guys. i just got my car on monday, so i am so afraid of messing it up... but the stock sound system is terrible! as long as you guys are positive that there's no security connection, than i suppose i'll give it a try ( i'm actually having someone do it for me, because i am clueless). do you think it will be hard to switch them back in three years (if i decide to give it back), although i'm pretty sure i'm going to keep it. i've had it less than 3 days, and i've already put 300 miles on it!!!

as long as you use wire harnesses and such, putting it back in later on will be as easy as removing it.

just to clarify, are you guys sure that there are no hidden security features on the ex coupe? either my salesman lied to me, or he just didn't know what he was talking about!

I had my HU installed at Best Buy. They have free reinstallation of factory audio equipment in case you have a lease or decide to sell your car.

I have an EX. No problems whatsoever with any security features when replacing the stock HU. Tell him he is a liar, many honda car salesmen seem to have a thing about lying to people they think are ignorant. Show him you aren't! Ignorance is not an excuse.
Seriously!

i think older civics had their security feature hooked up to the head unit. because if you look at it theirs a LED in the headunit that blinks. the salesman probably didn't know they changed it.

n i'm thinking you have a 4 door because everyone with a 4 door says their system sucks. i thought the oem system on the 2 door was pretty good for a stock system. probably the best i've heard, well besides in like a A4 or any other 'big ballin' cars.
