Right Front Speaker doesnt always play sound

Hello,

I have been experiencing this problem for a couple of months now, but it has gotten worse in the recent weeks...

When I use my stereo (aux or radio) sound doesnt always come from the front right speaker.

The problem is sometimes corrected when the following happens:
  • I turn the volume up very high
  • I go around a sharp left turn
  • I hit a particularly bumpy patch of road

I do have an aftermarket radio installed (which has been installed for ~ 7 years)

I assume this has something to do with the wiring (probably behind the center dash). Any one have any ideas (or quick fixes )

I was going to give you a real smart *** reply but seeing you've been here for 7ish years...I won't,lol

Seems like you already know what the problem is. Did you install the HU yourself? Do you know if the HU was installed with a Honda to ?? conversion kit? or were the wires cut?

If the wires were cut probably a good idea to look there for the issue. You could also try banging on the speaker when it's gone out on you. If that brings it back it's probably a bad connection at the speaker. Or you could be less lazy and just pull the speaker and visually inspect.

I'd beat on the radio. It's closer to the drivers seat.

So was beating on the speaker.....

Hey, it's a very valid diagnostic procedure. Dead serious.

Yeah I did stall in the HU myself. I dont recall having to cut any wires when I installed it. However, I never changed the the speakers they are stock.

What do you mean by the conversion kit?

Ill have to try banging on the head unit/speaker thing haha...

Re: Right Front Speaker doesnt always play sound

Usually referred to as a 'metra' kit I believe (been 3 years since I did mine). It's just a wire harness that has the Honda plug for the stereo wire on one side and the (JVC,Kenwood,Pioneer, etc) plug on the other side so you don't need to cut wires. If you do cut wires and only electrical tape them over then basically moisture can still get in and corrode the wires. Even though they are still connected the corrosion can still cause a bad connection like you are describing...7 years would be a likely time frame for that as well.

I know what a PITA it is to take apart the dash to get to the radio so like both ezone and I have suggested when the speaker fails bang on one or the other to narrow the possibilities.

EDIT: Although now that I think about it....I think I still had to cut and solder wires between the Honda hardness and the HU plug even with the kit...so could be the issue.

Ah yeah I had to esentially connect wires but I did it using something similar to a wire crimp (they had a sort of screws on each end). I dont recall soddering anything though.

Either way ill try banging on each thing but I know im probably going to have to take the console out haha. Ugh.

^^^ It's fine... the pod comes out easier each time as you loose more and more metal clips.

Solder and heat shrink is the way to fly.

ROTFL

I'm sooooo careful with that stuff now....on my 6 gen you have to take the entire dash apart to get the HU out....I assume it's the same on 7's

^^ 7ths are great, 2 screws under bottom and use your fingers and work Audio/HVAC pod out.

Re: Right Front Speaker doesnt always play sound

Ok guys banging on the right side of the HU/Console causes the speaker to temporarily come back on.

Ugh, I guess all there that is left to do is take it out haha...

Now you gotta narrow that down even further..... Is it the wiring or is it in the radio itself?

Hmm, yeah if the wiring looks alright then I assume it would be the radio... Unfortunately i don't have another radio to test on.

The problem is sometimes corrected when the following happens:
  • I turn the volume up very high
It's likely to be a poor solder joint inside the radio.....somewhere.
