so just recently (august) i purchased an 01 civic si with ~180km on it. the guy who had it put in a custom dash, but the problem is they only work when the car is cold?!?! in the morning when its all foggy + icy the dash lights come on and work for around 5 minutes then start to dim and light up until they just die. the red indicator sticks and odometer still light up tho and change brightness with the dimmer? and i can't figure out for the life of me what the button is to the left of the steering wheel is.. its just hanging out of the dash ?? any ideas? thanks!!

Looks like you have an overlay covering the original gauge faces.

Check this thread, this person had a similar issue and only mentioned the non-factory parts about halfway through the thread.

Your "switch" pic is about **** poor. If it isn't factory and isn't labeled, then either ask the previous owner or follow the wires and see what they connect to.
