I'm looking for a high output alternator for my 01 ex sedan that will bolt right in without having to modify anything, I also plan on bypassing the eld to keep my voltage up...I'm gonna be running a 3,000 watt system so the alt needs to be a decent one.. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Yup with my 6th gen I unplugged the ELD with no problems and voltage stayed at ~14.2 to 13.8V with most situations. I bought a 165A alternator for $125 shipped on ebay back in 2010 and it still works fine today after some abuse. Gets nice and loud like an electric motor on a hybrid car when I stress it. Cost another $100 to have it installed.

Assuming most (cheaply) rebuilt alternators have similar characteristics,
The voltage sags down to a consistent ~13.2V when you put about 2000 watts of load on it which is fine for me, it's delivering it's rated amps more or less.
It doesn't cool itself well enough when maxed out, it starts smelling after a few minutes so yours probably will to unless you keep it at high RPMs. Might want to go for a big body alternator if that's possible.

Make sure what you get has a decent warranty and buy a cigarette lighter volt meter.

EDIT: also, try to find an alternator that has a fan thing on the pulley so that it can cool itself better than the cheaper ones like the one I got

How did you unplug the ELD?

On a 6th gen anyway it's in the main fuse box under the hood under a few big fuses in the front. I think you take those out so you can take out the brown colored ELD module.
I think Canadian models come with it removed because of the colder weather

I have a 7th gen I don't think it's so simple. I'm going to check and see if I have one I never actually looked and have never heard of the Canadian thing

I think this is a 7th gen
and the following video turns out I made a while back for my 6th gen, watch from 12 minutes onward for a few minutes.


A couple things you might want to look out for; Cheapo rebuilt alternators like the 1 I got, it's not a big body, the pulley isn't any smaller than stock, and it doesn't have a fan blade on the pulley shaft. So, it would be a good idea to get those things if you plan on putting heavy continuous loads on the alternator. The rated amperage is definitely peak because the efficiency isn't that good, alternator will heat up. But for sound systems the peak is great for powering those bass notes.
