Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
I know, I know - I've been looking at getting an aftermarket player. The problem is - and maybe I'm just paranoid - but I fear that if I got a new radio, even if it has a detachable faceplate - someone might still want to break into the car, even if it's just to check the glove compartment and see if the faceplate is there.
So I'm back to square one, thinking maybe I can somehow figure out how to get my stock cd player to play burned CDs. I've tried burning at slower speeds, using different programs, and no, I did not burn them to MP3 format nor did I use a CD-RW. I've closed the sessions, I've also tried different CD-Rs. None of this seems to work.
Any advice? If anything, this problem has been bothering me so much that I just really want to solve it.
Thanks in advance guys!

There are newer OEM radios that will play CD-R's. Just picked up a radio out of a 2005 Special Edition that plays CD-R's, MP3, etc; there may be others. I'll be honest though, if you buy a new one you are well into "I could buy an aftermarket radio" territory. Some older OE radios simply will not play CD-R discs or are extremely hit and miss. For what it's worth, I had the best luck with Imation brand discs back in the day. You might want to see if there is an iPod integration kit for your car.

i feel you on the theft issues. i dont even have a radio anymore. but with the oem cd player, i was able to burn regular cd-r that played just fine. i used tdk most of the time and nero 7 ultra software. i am curious how your dx has a cd player. do you have the add on cd player that goes underneath the main fm radio? or do you have the ex cd player on top? reason i ask is they are different and one is newer than the other. and unfortunately we got screwed with the cd players not supporting mp3 files that honda later changed for the next gen of civic. also im not completely sure, but you may be able to use another honda radio (for accord, s2k, etc) with an adapter harness. i know on many older hondas, you could swap around the radios. in which case it would be finding which newer radio with mp3 or whatever can fit the civic. but you would prolly need the jdm/overseas rectangle trim piece for the dash, cause the usdm radio is a weird shape. another option is to buy the ipod adapter for the stock radio and get an ipod if you dont already have one. will give you tons of music and still keep the stock look and cd quality sound. the ipod interface will work with any of the 3 civic decks (fm radio, cassette, and cd player).
do you have the cd player on the bottom...

or the cd player on the top...

I don't want to go the route of an FM transmitter, and while it might be nice to get an aftermarket stereo, the whole theft thing/breaking in thing does bother me. If my stock cd player just played burned Cd's, I don't think I'd care to get a new stereo, you know?
I've tried Memorex, Sony, and some other brand of CD-Rs that escapes me right now. I've tried scouring the whole internet, and I'm surprised that no one else has had this problem (one person mentioned it, but never explained what cd-rs he used - he might have even gotten a new stereo, i can't remember). And I've tried Nero, itunes, Roxio. It's just frustrating.
I know that when I put in a burned CD, it might take like ten minutes before it plays. And then I can't skip songs otherwise it might take forever as well, or never play. And even when it plays it has problems.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks.

Hmmm..tell me more about the ipod adapter. I'm looking into it now. Seems more expensive than an aftermarket stereo (or about the same price as the better ones). Am I just overreacting? Should I just be getting a new stereo?
Re: Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
Billy, the -R or +R is a good question. I have a cd player that will only play +R, -R will not work at all.
Maybe this will help.

your paranoid. i live in one of the biggest cities in the country and have never used a stock cd player. tint your windows, lock your doors, get an alarm & be smart about what your doing
Re: Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
Back when my Civic had the stock radio (I have an Alpine head unit now), it wasn't able to play random CD's. I had the best luck with Sony CD's and I burned them with iTunes -> Audio CD.
My friend burned me a CD with his Mac and it played once and then never played again. Yeah, weird.

Re: Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
the ipod interface is NOT fm modulated. it is a direct digital connection using the ipod charging port. it sounds as good as or better than cd audio. costs around $100 if i remember and you get to keep the stock radio. i have a 2002 ex so ive had the cd player that goes on top. i also had the dx fm radio when i was using the ipod adapter (since it has a bigger lcd display for song info). ive never used the standalone add on cd player so not sure how it works but i think it is more basic than the standard player. you could go aftermarket but most of those units sound terrible anyway and dont last very long. wouldnt really be worth the trouble unless you go with an alpine. and even then the decks are still flashy looking. im trying to find something to replace the tape deck on our old accord and am looking at older used decks from the early 90s that actually looked normal without a million colors.

BUT, to stay on subject, I agree with the paranoia thing. I live in Vegas, park in "bad" parts of town all the time, and I don't take my faceplate (well, half-faceplate, technically speaking) off simply because I'm lazy. My head unit is still in my car. It's not exactly an inconspicuous head unit, either..

Re: Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
Damn Riceboy, that looks really nice. My 2002 Honda Civic DX does not look like that - can you believe it? Me neither.
So my options are these:
1. Get an ipod adapter per Gearbox's suggestion - $100 or so
2. Find the right brand of CD-Rs to use
3. Get an aftermarket stereo
4. FM Transmitter - maybe the GoGroove one
I'm not a fan of #4. #2 is the easiest way to go, though like I said, I've tried Memorex, Sony, and some other brand that escapes me and they didn't work. And they were CD-Rs. #1 allows me to deter break-ins, since I'll still have the stock radio, though does the cable just hang out there or am I able to hide it somewhere? And #3 probably solves the problem as well as enable the car additional features like bluetooth, usb port, auxiliary jack, maybe even better sound, but increases the likelihood of theft and break-ins.
So which is the best way to go? So far, no one has tried to mess with my car, which is great. Hopefully the thieves know that since it's a DX with manual locks and windows, and a 7th gen, they won't really care to mess with it, maybe even with an aftermarket stereo. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking?
Thanks

not gonna lie, I've overlooked little things like that before.. Just a courtesy dummy check. I find those to be quite helpful from time to time..

dude u can get a basic, single din deck for around $100 that will let u use an ipod via the usb cord (i think thats what ipod's use). it will sound a hell lot better than that stock garbage deck. u have to be a ****ing idiot to even break into a car for a single din, u cant get money from those anymore lol

I don't know - I just ordered some Fujifilm CD-Rs to see if the stock CD player would play those, so we'll see when they arrive. I actually don't mind the stock deck at all, and if it could play the Fujifilm CD-Rs, problem solved. If not, I'm back to square one.

Re: Why won't my 2002 Civic DX play burned CDs??
i think the unit is pa11-hon for ipod. all the cable is hidden behind the deck. the blue connector goes in the back of the stereo (all 01-05 civic units are compatible) and you can hide everything behind the glove box and leave the cable there too. i had mine running under the carpet to the passenger seat so i could hide the ipod under the seat but have enough slack to leave on seat when playing.

Is this true? If I was to get a radio, I definitely would get a single din. I was eyeing out the Pioneer DEH6400BT, after doing a crap load of research. it's the one I thought would be best.
