with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
I had a very bad experience today. I was driving a few miles from home with full a/c on my car and after driving it for a few miles,(4-5mi) the car engine just stopped, car would not take any gas, all lights and everything flickering and car came to a complete stop. Gladly it happened to me on my local streets, if it had happened to me on a freeway i would probably have had an accident.
After the car stopped, i just took a deep breath and started the car back again and car started, i closed off the A/c and it ran just fine.
I dont understand how full a/c and engine stopping are correlated. what happened here? how to fix it. please help. The day prior, i had a Denso Rear O2 sensor installed & the code on CEL cleared. The CEL light is on & shows the MAP sensor code again.(P1129). A new map sensor along with wiring to the Map sensor were replaced six months ago.

Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
yeah the a/c puts a HUGE load on the electrical system and it sounds like something is wrong either loose battery cables, alternator power cable, or weak battery.
Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
similar thing happened to me last month i was parked listening to music and my head unit started cutting out then all the dash lights started flashing and twitching like when your battery dies i checked under the hood and the negative battery terminal was completely loose.
Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
Yes it seems a heavy load when driving on the pedal, also, the alternator was tested at Pepboys before the drive and had good readings. the charging system test showed Good battery, starter and alternator.
Charging System test showed 14.45( NO load) and 13.650 (Loaded).
There are also new battery cables. The battery cables were taken off & codes read.
CEL is showing P1505 (Vaccum Leak) & P1129 (Map Sensor)
Could any of this have to do with the sudden loss of engine power.
A visual inspection by putting throttle body cleaner/carb cleaner into & near the hoses have shown no leaks just yet. When p1505 code shows on CEL, Is the smoke test for vaccum leaks really that necessary?
I cant drive my car no more for there is no A/c on while driving.

Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
looks like vacuum leak may have been caused by cleaning tb/iac and reusing old gaskets. might need a new tb/im gasket and tb/iac gasket. the map sensor is unrelated and needs to be changed. basically tells the engine how much air pressure there is and critical to engine operation.
Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
gearbox, i did have a fuel pump changed around 1st August,2012 you think that may have caused it. IAC/TB were not touched, just sprayed on from outside however, spark plugs needs replacement i think. (do not have Denso/NGK).
Just went near end of hoses & sprayed carb cleaner.IAC/TB not taken apart.
The car is running smooth to my knowledge.(No idle) except shaking or load when putting the A/c on. At idle, the revs are upto 800rpms (not exceeding 1k).
I think it needs a ECM/PCM re-learn.(if not mistaken its fuse#6) or ECU fuse reset. i am told fuses r located under steering wheel in my 03 civic.
do you think gearbox that would change anything. I had an A/c inspection & they told me the A/c belt may need replacement!!!! but the compressor/condersor are good.

Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
well ecu reset is usually only to set idle speed if it is having issues. it would not cause major problems other than rpms to not quite be right.
Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
so then its not ecu. ok. lowlife emtnioned battery wires loose? checked looks ok.
what would load up the Engine when A/c is on, heavy enough to shut down engine.?
A/c Compressor (had it checked it looks ok)
a/c Belt (is maybe a little loose but not dangerous)
All starter things (battery cables, battery, alternator, starter wiring) looks good too.
There r no idle issues so (IAC, Throttle Body, TPS sensor) looks good. Map sensors a seperate issue.
the Camshaft/Crankshaft sensors havent been ever touched, so very unlikely.
Vaccum Leaks is the only solution left?

Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
I must say i drove again today for nearly 10-12mi but w/o A/c on? and car runs good.
Is spark plugs to be changed anyone thinks? They r not NGK or Denso?

Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
I started my car & left it on park with full A/c on & the engine died less than 5 mins later. Then i re-started the car few minutes later with full a/c and
at this time, the temperature gauge went above half (almost 3/4 Hot) & i shutoff the engine. It did not shutoff by itself.
In another thread, GEARBOX,u mention pcv valves would kill engine system. do u think thats something I need replaced/cleaned.

Re: with A/c on car ENGINE stops while driving
UPDATE TO A/C & ENGINE
the issue: when at stop signs with A/c on ENGINE shakes/bogs down/shuts off.
PROBLEM SOLVED: A new A/c fan was installed and i'd say its not completely resolved but i am able to go long distances with my a/c on while driving and the car when idle or in traffic light does idle rough however, the temp gauge is never really hot. (the temp gauge would move to hot very quickly upon starting a/c and in stop & go traffic. Now that happens no more, even in stop & go traffic).
I still have a p1505 problem!!!!! that needs resolved.Have yet to check for vacuum leak at the PCV valve and hose, EVAP canister, (could be my vapor canister) purge valve, throttle body, and brake booster hose.
I have done following so far to the car.
Changed to NGK spark plugs.
Changed wire harness to Map Sensor.
Cleaned throttle Body with TB cleaner.
changed air filter
Changed Fuel Feed Hose for it was cut previously & was leaking tiny amounts of fuel.
So far no changes are noticed. Did an idle re-learn anyways and took off Backup Fuse. The battery, battery wires, alternator readings and A/c compression readings r ok
Now you know where that air filter goes in a 03 civic (right under the throttle body) that rubber, the wiring harness falls off and leaves its off. The legs underneath the Air Cleaner Case Set (wherein the Engine air filter goes in) there are atleast two legs broken and some of the screws that hold that Air Filter are missing!!!!!! (atleast 3). Its $42/-
Does that have anything to do with this a/c not working while driving or engine getting very very bogged down. Does that sound like a p1505 (Vaccum Leak) code on CEL.
If that wont work than its gonna have to b the THROTTLE BODY ASSB from Ebay with TPS sensor on it.
what do you suggest?
