Speedometer Problem

Hey guys. Recently my speedometer stoppd working.

Connected it up to a scanner and it seems the VSS is reporting to the cluster. (Reads actual speed) But the speedo stays pinned at 0.

I tried to do the "gauge test" and all of the needles sweep back and forth, even the speedo. It will work for a day or two after the test, then just get stuck again.
However all needles move smoothly during the test except for the speedo gauge. It moves in small incraments, and makes a bit of noise. (Sounds like its binding)

Before I have to get a new gauge (Not the bad part) and having it reflashed at the dealer (The bad part)- Not sure what a dealer will hit me for.. perhaps only 1 hour shop rate..?

Is it easy enough for me to get into the gear assembly and put lube in there?
If so what should I put? 3 in 1 oil comes to mind, perhaps a light grease? Thanks guys.

Re: Speedometer Problem

it is not easy to get in it and lube it...actually, its not feasible at all. you probably have a bad motor in it.

why not just buy a used guage on ebay or something?

as long as you record to current milage of your old tach, and the current milage of your new tach (take a picture and document it), you wont get into any legal trouble when/if you decide to cell the car. but remember you must inform the owner and give him proof.

Failed sweep test. Needs a cluster.

I know you can find stepper motors on ebay for GM clusters (dirt cheap!), but I have never looked for Hondas parts like that.

04 Civic?
Dealer would be sending a new cluster out to a speedo shop to get mileage entered. Last time we did it, it took about 10 days. (Palo Alto).

If you are on good terms with a dealer, I'd think you can buy it at the parts counter and have them document the actual mileage on your car, have them ship the new one out for the mileage cal, then give it to you when it comes back.
(Meanwhile, you have been driving the entire time while waiting for it to arrive.)
You replace it yourself, save that hour labor charge. Plug and play.

Not sure if the old unit has to go back though. Ask at the parts counter.

Re: Speedometer Problem

Thanks sleepy and ezone. Not what I wanted to hear, but the truths the truth.
No luck on finding a new stepper motor for these things.

Ezone- This HAS to be done with a new one correct? A dealer or anyone else for that matter wont reprogram a used one will they?

I can get a used one on ebay for about $75.
Dealer wants over $600.
Hefty price tag just to get my speedo to work.
Thats not including the reprogramming ($200-300?) or installation ($100) (Which I can do)

Re: Speedometer Problem

No, you can start at zero miles if you want.

Price: Enter your VIN in Majestics site and look yours up. (under Meter) Don't try to pick your own, let the VIN do it. LOL

Like I said, mileage is the only thing to program. Once that is done, it is plug and play.

Call some speedo shops yourself and ask if they can and will program a used cluster. Last I knew, there was at least one in NY, but I'm not sure of that anymore.

This is the only place listed in Hondas bulletin
http://www.paspeedo.com/
Probably cheapest if you can get it done on your own. Cut out the middleman (dealer).

Re: Speedometer Problem

lol, I dont want to start at 0. I am not trying to do anything immoral.

I wonder if they will fix my old one? Or is that just a waste since they are so cheap used on ebay?

Re: Speedometer Problem

Before I forget:

A dealer or anyone else for that matter wont
Dealers weren't given the necessary equipment to do this on a 7th gen.
We CAN'T (as a whole) do it.
We have to send it out to a speedo shop.
(Unless you can find some dealer that has invested in the equipment necessary to do this task.)

Re: Speedometer Problem

I know some russians in georgia that repair airbags and they also claim to reset milleage. There website is http://www.myairbags.com/products.php

Ive used them to reset airbag codes and to rebuild seatbelts, and this involved shipping out my equipment and they would ship it back to me within a week

Re: Speedometer Problem

Emailed Paspeedo last night and they got back to me this afternoon. (Pretty quickly)
Paspeedo said two day turn around. However they said parts are not available to repair it.

They only want $175 to set the new milage. Only catch is I have to pay shipping both ways.
They said a used one is fine as long as I check it before I send it to them to verify that it works.

So I guess for roughly $300 I can get this all done legitly.

Thanks again guys.

That's handy information right there. Thanx.

Box it up good with lots of padding.
