Another Speaker Upgrade Thread

Now, I know there are a million speaker upgrade threads out there, but there's a couple details that I didn't find when I searched.
I have a 2004 EM2 EX.
I'll start off by giving my situation. I installed a Pioneer DEH-3300UB h/u, which is just a fairly basic one; I chose this one solely because it has both USB and AUX ports. Now, I recently thought about how my sound system might sound better with some better 6x9s in the back since I still have the stock (Pioneer Branded) speakers all around. Really, the sound coming from the front speakers is good at least for now, and even the amount of bass from the 6x9s is almost adequate, but I think it could be a little clearer and less distorted in some cases. Loudness really isn't necessary because I'm fine with how loud it'll go now, so I assume an amp really isn't necessary for my situation. As a baseline, let's just use Crutchfield for pricing and fitment, etc; I'll be using them to research but may buy from elsewhere.
First off, I remember reading about how the stock speaker wiring is, in some way, going to mess up your speakers eventually. Is this true? I'm only going to upgrade the speakers if I can reconnect the old wires to the new speakers and leave it as-is.
Second, (and I know this isn't going to be accurate for all situations) how much should I be looking to spend on a new set of 6x9s that will be a good improvement over the stock speakers, especially for my situation? I don't need any advice as to brand because there seems to be enough on that subject on the webs.
Third, I know a lot of people are firm believers in upgrading the front speakers first, but if anything, I'll be doing the whole lot or just the 6x9s first. Are there any reasons as to why I should also upgrade the fronts if I already like the sound I'm getting?
Fourth, and lastly, I've read that the tweeters are 1" and can be upgraded. Anyone out there who's done this? I'm mainly just curious since, like I said, I'm happy with the overall sound from the front.

Any advice/input/help/etc. is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Another Speaker Upgrade Thread

First off, if you're running a coupe (since coupes are the ones with 6x9's)
You get most of your sound stage from your front speakers, where most of your listening happens.
The rear 6x9's are mostly just filling sound, for the folks in the rear.

Stock wiring is fine for aftermarket speakers, but you do need a harness, since it's not just a POS and NEG wire to hook up, instead it uses an adapter.

Even if you like the sound you're getting from your stock speakers, keep in mind, that both the aftermarket and stock speakers will be playing on different levels, you may need to crank up the volume to have your aftermarket speakers sounding nice.
So the problem here is that, you have clear sounding nice music in the back, and distorted music in the front because the stocks cant keep up.

Yes. the front 1" tweeter can be replaced. There are a few people on this forum with upgraded tweeters.
If you were going to upgrade your front speakers, I suggest getting a pair of component speakers, that way you upgrade both your speaker and your tweeters at the same time.

PS. Be aware if you're planning to upgrade your rear 6x9's, as we have depth issues because the trunk spring is directly under.
Make your measurements and make sure the speaker will fit before purchasing.
Also, we have fitment/depth issues in the front as well.

i wouldn't even get 6×9s for the back get 5 or 6 inch components and just make a templet plate out of wood to fill in the 6×9 hole it also spaces the speakers from the trunk door bar. thats what i did anyway.

Re: Another Speaker Upgrade Thread

I just took em out all together, helps the airflow for my sub anyways.

I was thinking to just drill a hole in the rear plastic panels and mount a pair of tweeters for the folks sitting in the back, thats pretty much all they need.

Re: Another Speaker Upgrade Thread

Actually, a lot of the bass from my sound system comes from the 6x9s and getting rid of them isn't an option. I'm not planning on getting a sub for my car ever, because that's too much bass for a little cheap car like a Vic. I don't want my car to get rattled by a sub. I like the amount of bass I get from my 6x9s, I just want it to be a little clearer. Plus, I like having no extra wiring, and also like having none of my trunk volume being taken up by a bigass box. I know there are smaller enclosures and smaller subs to go with, but even then, I don't like the look of the sub and how it will likely block the passthrough when I want to fold the seats down, or that I'll have to drill unnecessary holes in my car to secure the thing. Really, I know what I want in my car. I just want to upgrade the existing speakers with speakers of the same size. Going to smaller speakers in the rear isn't a logical idea, since 6x9s are the largest speaker I can put into the rear decklid area, and will produce the best bass response; and since I can't put larger speakers into the doors, this is where my bass needs to come from. I understand that some of the bass will come from the 6.5s in the front, but not as much. It seems like most of the highs come from the tweeters, mids from the door speakers, and lows from the rears, generally speaking, that is.

a system with no sub is pointless in my opinion.

I cant stand driving with no sub

I know you probably still don't want a sub, but there are small flat, powered subwoofers like 8" that you can install under the rear passenger footwell, or under the seat.
Just so you may want to consider. Those save a lot of room, isnt too bass-y and provides enough "umph" in your music.

If you're dead on not adding a sub, then I would definitely upgrade both fronts and rear at the same time.

The wiring you need is a Honda speaker adapter

I suggest a Component 6.5 in the front, and 3-way Coaxial 6x9 in the rear.
Lower priced 6.5:

Higher end 6.5:

Lower priced 6x9:

If you can afford some of the entry level JL Audio C2/C3's they are really nice. But the markups for them are pretty high.

Thanks for all the help, man! I appreciate it! So, I need 2 sets of the adapters, correct? And then how does it work to install tweeters in stock housing?

Re: Another Speaker Upgrade Thread

so, thanks again for the help guys, but I'll probably do the responsible thing and wait until I'm finished applying to colleges and subsequently paying all of the application fees, before I do anything about my speakers. Though I'll definitely refer to this thread when it comes to the info/advice already given, and any questions I might have when the time comes.
