Help with upgrading my sound system
Help with upgrading my sound system
I just purchased a pioneer head unit.. it is a pioneer avh-p3300bt. I am wanting to upgrade my speakers and am on a budget so I am trying to decide which ones to do first. Is it better to replace the rear 6X9's or the front 6.5's first? Also which brand do you guys prefer, Pioneer or Alpine? And before anyone asks, I am going to be powering it with the HU, not buying an amp until way down the road when I decide to get a sub...
Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
I would get some pioneers. I got some D1702R's that got a lot of bump for 6.5's. You already got a pioneer HU so grab some pioneer speakers! you gotta watch out for mounting depth though, to large of a mounting depth and it will get in the way of the window housing-aka your windows will come in contact with the speaker. A way to avoid that is making/buying some 1/2inch spacers.
I thought the rears were 6.5 inch-same as the front. I would do fronts, then rears.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Three way Pioneers are a safe choice. They have good treble and a very nice amount of bass till you get your sub. I also had a double din Pioneer and they fit perfectly. To make your life easier and any future owners of the car get a harness and a metra trim piece from ebay and you should be good to go.
Personally i would not buy just one pair of speakers until i can buy all four since you can find good ones for cheap but if your going to change a pair might as well be the front one like 7gen said. Oh and you might just want to try and hear the stock speakers with the unit. I remember mines sounding a hell of a lot better with the aftermarket radio.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Alright thanks so sounds like front first... speedDown, I am installing the HU this weekend and won't be purchasing the speakers til next week anyways so I will listen to them with Hu first to make sure I still want them.
Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
i wouldn't get pioneer or alpine there are just so many better choices regarding sound quality i would go Focal,Polk,Boston,Diamond,JL,JBL,Morel, Infinity Kappa, and my favorite German Maestro plus alot more options. i don't get it its like people just get whatever they sell at best buy.
Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Lowlife, best buy does sell pioneer at their store but if i'm not mistaken, it is just pioneer's lower end stuff. If I get speakers and no matter what the brand, im going to get something in one of the higher end lines. If I'm going to do it, might as well spend the little bit of extra money and do it right.
Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
I work at best buy for a side job and I would completely agree. The only thing I would buy there is polk audio. They used to carry my favorite of rockford fosgate but stopped carrying it in exchange for polk.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
The polk MM line are really nice, and i love em, but they're a tad on the wallet breaking side.
I'm currently running polk db series, which are really nice too.
OP
If you're running a coupe, and planning to get a sub in the near future
I would advise you to upgrade the 6.5's first, then when you get the sub, have a 6x9 delete (meaning removing them all together)
You get a way better sound stage that way
Oh, and make sure you get 6.5 components, so you replace your tweeters as well.
I can really vouch for JL Audio, Polk, Rockford fosgate, Focal, and Infinity.
All the ones they sell at bestbuy, (Pioneer, alpine, kenwood) are decent at best.
I would do some shopping online, at like sonicelectronix.com, or crutchfield.com
PS.
If you're in the states and have a fry's electronics nearby, I would highly suggest you check out the Autotek ATX6.5C they have.
Really nice quality speakers for the price. for $40 a pair, they can almost compare to polk's MM brand. Which is a REALLY good deal to say the least.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Yea sure there a ton of better speakers than the ones on best buy and walmart but if you think about what he is trying to do which if just replace two speakers becauseThers not much to work with and to be honest even the cheapest pioneers will sounds a hell of a lot better than oem speakers. Unless you have 20 bucks more to get better speakers.
By the way what is you're budget anyway?

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Being on a budget doesnt mean you have to cheap out either.
I was on a budget, I bought my sub, an amp, a deck, and speakers for less than $300, and had it all installed for another 100 more.
Just gotta be on the lookout for good deals

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Yes I am on a budget, but when I said I am on a budget I didn't mean it in the way it was said. If that makes any sense. I meant more of I am not wanting to spend the money to replace my front and back speakers at once. I am willing to spend a little more money for the higher line of speakers because I am not looking just to upgrade the oem speakers, but to get great sound quality also.
I am wanting to spend less than $160 for the speakers, whether it be the front 6.5's or the back 6X9's. Then later on I will spend another 150 bucks or so to get the other set or a sub (probably will spend more than that when buying a sub since i'll need an amp too) like mentioned above. From what I have seen, mostly everything I have found is around 130 or less which is perfectly fine.
I am also trying to figure out which brand to go with on the speakers because once I buy these, I will buy the rest of my speakers by that same brand to complete my system. For example, I don't want Alpine in the front and Kenwood in the back and then a Pioneer sub.

If you're planning to do the 1 brand route
Personally, I would recommend Rockford Fosgate
Speakers, sub, amp, you cant go wrong. It'll sound fantastic too.
Though, personal choice, I would use a Kicker/MTX amp to power the RF subs.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Best buy only stocks some pioneer speakers. I know they have A-series there but they don't have the D-series which I like a bunch.
Check out sonicelectronix.com and just weed out what you want and don't want.
cheers!

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
nah you don't want to use rockford for mids and highs rockford is only good for there highet end amps and subs plus there not what they use to be. it seems once a company sells out to walmart=sony or best buy=rockford they start half assing there product. as for your final choice in speakers idk thats up to you but i did give you some examples. i would recommend German MAESTRO they are the original manufacturers of MB Quart but i believe there out of your price range.
Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Can someone give me the exact sizing for the 6.5 in the front? I need to know how deep I can go. I have seen different websites say different things so I am wanting to figure this out for sure before I go buy something and then have to spend a ton of money to make it fit.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
I forget the exact value, I wrote it down long ago, lost the paper
It's not very deep, somewhere in between 2" and 2.5" (most say its deeper, because they measure to the door, but if you took out the stock speakers, you'll notice there's a bar inside blocking your way)
I would buy these
http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Sli.../dp/B000P0NJPS
They are a for sure fit, since that's what I have
I would still buy speaker brackets for easier install

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Thanks Kenny, those were actually one of the pairs I have been looking at. I am also thinking about these: They have a little more power and right around the price I am wanting to spend.

Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
Oh ok thanks glad you said that. I'm not to familiar with the sensitivity part I just know about the watts and how that works... a little.
Re: Help with upgrading my sound system
back when Circuit shity was around I purchased Polk 6x9's and went with two 12" kicker comps in a ported kicker box running off a simple pioneer mono amp; All of that mind you running off the stock HU. Yup, I'm probably one of the few who liked that stock flush clean look of that underpowered no bells/whistles stock HU. I have since upgraded to a Kenwood HU and have installed a Boston 4chan amp to sit next to the pioneer amp. I replaced my fronts with Alpine (forget the type) they were from Bestbuy. Boston amp and HU were from Crutchfield.com, use discount coupins and the price can work out well for you...just wait for the deals. That being said: OP you should be able to pick up what you need from just about anywhere and get a good deal as long as you shop around.
Good luck with the install (that's half the fun!) and like other posts are saying 'try the new HU with the stock speakers' it will sound much better compare to stock and perhaps it'll hold you over for a while, save some cash and be happy
win win right?
