new deck, should i keep it?
i had an impulse buy moment at walmart today and bought a new Sony CDX-GT55UIW for $135 after tax. i was starting to get bored with my alpine 9847 because altho it sounds great and looks stock, its too boring and outdated. all it can do is play mp3 cds. the sony, as cheap as it is, can play mp3 cd and also has a usb port on the front for both flash drive AND my ipod nano! i can actually use all my new technology in the car now lol. and its a real usb ipod connection with deck control or ipod control, not the stupid aux stereo jack. backlight is blue with white lcd screen, it doesnt match at all with my orange led dash but i think it will still look nice. the alpine is getting old (5yrs+) and cant do anything. the sony looks so nice and i know they are junk but for the looks and price and function, i cant see anything that would beat it.

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
Upgrading your deck is one of the most practical useful mods you can do, every minute you spend in your car you will make use of it so I would definitely install it. I'm insanely bothered by things that don't match, so I would need to change all the LEDs or buy a deck that matches though...

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
for the USB/ipod alone it's worth it.
I just bought the Kenwood equivalent of that from BestBuy on boxing day but it's still in shipping.
I've got an 8gb Patriot mini zip drive that will more then hold all my mp3s.
that rocks. LOL

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
installing now...looks so nice in the dash already lol. very shiny and new. makes the dull oem climate ***** cheap
next up soldering the harness and all that wiring stuff. the only thing i dont like is the flimsy sony cage thats loose and sliding around. i mean it will keep the deck from popping out when i hit the brakes at least, but its still jiggly. and the deck itself is a bit narrow for the hole. it doesnt like the metra dash kit. colors are messed due to indoor lighting. no faceplate case! i knew something was missing lol. and it has two lighting modes green and blue, ofcourse im using the blue. it has alot of stuff for me to learn too.

I love aux jacks! I have a calrion single din radio and I never use the usb plug. It's just so impractical to go through 4000 songs, one by one, folder by folder, on the radio. Much easier with aux.
Re: new deck, should i keep it?
I bought the Kenwood equivalent cause it came with speakers. $69.99 out the door at the Shack. Absolutely love the AUX.
Boxing day? Sounds like some crazy bank invented holiday. lol.

Hey it's like choosing between the original iphone and the iphone 4g ... take the newest one
I say put in the sony, and from the pic it looks pretty good! The jiggly-ness sucks but it's a love hate relationship i guess
It's the Canadian Black Friday (but it happens the day after Christmas).
I bought a $350 pair of Dr. Dre Beats headphones for $200, i love Boxing Day

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
switchable usb ipod control ftw! press a button and i can control everything directly from ipod. for usb flash drive, if i ever use one, it has rapid search where you just turn the wheel and it flies thru the songs. then press it and it plays the song you picked. searching has come a long way.
Re: new deck, should i keep it?
my deck is a sony and i love it! it was 250 back in 09 though. but it sounds really good! makes my stock bass actually rattle the windows, not like the shitty amp on the stock unit. how is yours performing sound wise?
here's mine, i like the *** on yours.

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
very nice. yeah so far this sony is really impressing. the sound is nowhere near alpine, but i wasnt expecting it. and there is only so much a set of 8yr old infinity speakers can put out. not much bass but okay. i really like the 'xplod' preset eq and stuck with that for now. the deck was super easy to learn on my own and i setup all the functions and stuff. i love the blue at night, it goes very nicely with the orange dash. and the white lcd is perfect match for the stock 04-05 gauge numbers. im so happy with the new look and it adds excitement to the inside lol. so far some really neat stuff is the radio displays what the station name is! like magic, krnv, z31pop etc. radio quality is good, but not great. i hate radio so no loss there. cd mode is nice, there is a small annoying EQ moving in the corner that cant be turned off but its not distracting. the deck beeps when you press a button but luckily i turned that off so its nice and quiet. deck has two power off modes. full blackout, or all the blue and white backlight with just the clock in the corner, depending on if you want music, just light, or nothing. overall its pretty simple and easy to use. im off to test mp3 cd now and most importantly the ipod! coming back later...
crappy pic, camera totally messed the colors. the blue is a rich dark blue, and the display is pure white. led dash came out okay. the blue isnt that bright in person either. it matches the dash leds very well.

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
nah i tried a cd, but not stuff i usually listen to. actually when i found some good stations, radio was pretty good almost like cd quality. okay im back, the usb ipod is fantastic in every way! i couldnt believe the sound quality, better than cd, and the ipod controls on the deck are easier than using the stupid ipod wheel. there is zero lag time switching between 2 hr long songs, its faster than my computer.
super easy to use the ipod, you just plug the usb in and switch to usb mode. searching is so easy, i just click the search button, select a playlist, then use the wheel to turn and scroll thru songs til i get the one i want, then click the button to play it. this is by far the best deck ive used in a long time, and ive been thru quite a few from low to high end kenwood, pioneer, alpine, and now sony. this one gets the gearbox seal of approval 5 stars so long as i dont get any skipping when i drive the car around tomorrow. thats the only thing that can ruin it for this deck. otherwise WIN for only $135 lol.

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
ooh lol. i actually looked at alot of different sony before deciding on this one, mainly for the looks. and i didnt need all the expensive buletooth stuff on the others. altho the one where you hook up the ipod and it goes *inside* the radio was pretty neat.

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
heres the cheaper version $150 at walmart. it just has the regular display with segments instead of biolite. looks really good and i thought about getting it, but i told myself a long time ago i will never consider decks where the face folds down, too many problems. so i went with fixed cd slot in the front. i guess if you dont need to take the ipod out alot for other things (i do) then should be okay.

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
good choice for not choosing a deck with a screen that folds down/up/or whatever. ive seen some of my friends with them and if you hit a few too many pot holes (Quebec streets are known as some of the worst in the world) or you're too rough with it, it'll get loose and rattle and even maybe break off. yours looks nice

Re: new deck, should i keep it?
Finaly, someone open minded to try out the sony decks.
I have been singing about them a lot on the forums lately.
Isnt the ease of Sony's menus so easy to learn?
I mean honestly, Sony has some crappy car audio equipments, but their decks are awesome starter decks, for their price and noob friendly systems.
The only weird thing with sony's is that they have curved decks, instead of flat ones, thats why they fit oddly in our metra kits.
But then again, I like the curved looks of them
Clarion, JVC and Kenwood have VERY messy menu systems, which I do not like
Sony's menu system is VERY easy to work with.
I've been talking about these decks for a while now, who needs CD's anymore with their Compressed enhancements for digital music, they sound almost the same, if not better than CD quality
