First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

I've got an 03' coupe and I want a high quality system that rocks for under 1000.

Right now, I'm thinking Alpine SPR-13S in the doors, Alpine SPR-69C for the rear deck and a Kenwood Excelon x600F to power them. I'm thinking about a Kenwood X794 deck to replace the crappy Sony in place now.(I think it has one set of preamps)

I was also wondering if I should even bother with the rear deck. I know there are two schools of thought on that topic. I do have a nice home theater and I'm used to being enveloped in luxurious sound.

I'm not sure if I want a sub, probably leaving that option open for a future upgrade. This is my first post and first DIY mod. Any feedback you could leave would be great. Thanks!

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

Doing the rear speakers might quench your need for a sub because you have 6x9s.

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

You can get a decent system for under 1G, and a lot of options
Your selection looks pretty decent and looks like you did your hw

I have an 03 coupe as well, i have front 6.5's and no rear deck, took em out
I put 12" sub in and walked away with a system under $500, love it

Trust me, your speakers will tease you to get a sub, might as well get it early, im guessing you dont want overpowering subs, so maybe a strong 10" will do you fine

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

I don't know if you saw in the other thread you posted in, but why you goin with the spr-13's? why not the 17's? Stock speakers are 6½", and the 13's are only 5¼". I'm rocking the SPR-17C's (non component verison of the ones your looking at) in my 02 coupe, and they have a larger mounting depth. That, and according to alpine's website, the 17c/s are the same price as the respective 13c/s. I'm just asking for curiosity sake.

Was going to offer the same suggestion. Also, if you're gonna get 6x9's, get a sub. Like someone above mentioned, it's gonna tease you and call you bad names.

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

I guess I was under the impression that components up front have better SQ and are capable of providing a more detailed sound image. Am I wrong? What would be the difference? And, if I go component up front am I going to need help in the mids and almost be forced to go with rear decks immediately?

Yes, an overpowering sub is not what I want. I want a sub that will blend and complement the music. I'm down for recommendations.

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

you can still go component. I'm just wondering why the 5¼" set (SPR-13S) instead of the 6½" set (SPR-17S)

Components generally do give better sound quality up front because you can mount the tweeters so they point toward your head. Thus, better sound quality. You can put them in the back, too and mount the tweeters accordingly. Either way you're fine.

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

I was under the impression that those needed to be installed in kick panels, not the door(thank you crutchfield). Is that a "Can we please sell you more ****?" tactic? And is there anything sweet to do for tweeter housing? Anything I can buy or just drill some holes in the A pillars and mount them in there?
Thanks again for the input guys, I appreciate it.

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

Crutchfield never gave any impression on where to install the tweeters lol, it's a great site.

However, in your situation, go look around for some 7th gen civic EX door sails.
The EX provides tweeters on the corner of your door panel

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

definitely grab some ex sail panels. It'll give you a nice OEM look. I'd hook you up with a pic if I had one.

It will only work if you have power mirrors though.

Re: First DIY Audio - Thoughts? Input?

Yeah Crutchfield is a legit site. I'd go with the sails, too. I haven't seen it done, would love to see a picture of it once it's done. I have power mirrors in my 6th gen, too. Who knows, maybe I'll go back to components...
