buring alts.

iam now on my 4th alt. in my 03 civic lx 4dr.. i have noticed that the alt is way to friken close to the exhust manifold.. and when i go on a road trip, like over 1000miles, i usually return with a burn out alt... is there something i can wrap around the manifold to shield the alt from the heat? or i am thinking of running a pipe from the bumper up to the alt and this will blow cold air across it.. just a thought.

Re: buring alts.

the exhaust manifold should have a heat shield on it already. if it doesn't then you can get insulating manifold wrap from a parts store.

Re: buring alts.

Do you have any aftermarket audio? Huge subs/amps etc? Those things can burn through alternators like nobody's business.

Re: buring alts.

the exhaust manifold wouldn't cause the alternator to melt. i don't have a heat shield on my mani and i've never even had to change the alternator.

Re: buring alts.

improper ventilation can cause worn bearings, one of the biggest causes of alternator failure besides charging system issues or worn belts.

Re: buring alts.

having too much tension in the belt could also wear the bearings out.

This. I just had my alternator replaced due to shot bearings because whoever serviced my car from the previous owner tightened the belts way too much. I've got to get a new AC compressor as well because the bearings are shot on that as well.
