Rookie Head Unit Install
Rookie Head Unit Install
Hello everyone,
As you can see by my grand total of 1 post, I am new to this forum. I am also a relatively new car owner, having just bought a 2005 civic SE last September. I bought a new head unit (low end Sony CDX-GT130) to replace the stock one, so that I can play music using the auxiliary input. I also purchased a dash kit from ebay, which came with a wiring harness.
The majority of the wires from the harness I have no concern over (the 8 speaker wires, the ground, 12V ignition/switched, and 12V battery/constant). These seem pretty straight-forward.
However, the three wires I am worried about from the factory harness are the orange (illumination/dash light), orange/white (dimmer), and blue (power antenna).
The Sony installation instructions indicate that the blue wire should be connected to the power antenna (aerial) control lead or power supply lead of antenna (aerial) booster. It also says that if the car has a built-in antenna in the rear/side glass (which I think is the case in my car), I should connect the power antenna (aerial) control lead (blue) or the accessory power supply lead (red) to the power terminal of the existing antenna (aerial) booster. Here is a link to the instructions.
So one of my questions is: what wire should I connect the blue wire from the Sony side to, on the factory harness side (if I need to connect it at all)?
My other question references this thread.
If I understand correctly, if I just remove the orange and orange/white wires from the factory harness side, the head unit will still light up but the brightness will not be adjustable. Is this correct?
Any other tips on the install in general would be appreciated as well. I have found the instructions on how to get the stock head unit out, so the wiring is my only real concern.
Thanks!

Re: Rookie Head Unit Install
do NOT hook the dimmer wire up, very bad things tend to happen like burning out all your dash lights. i would not hook the illumination wire either, unless you really want to have dimming capability when the park lights are turned on (you will still have manual dimming function from the deck even without hooking the wire up). the power antenna wire must be hooked up otherwise the radio reception will be bad. now i just checked the wiring, and seems that sedans do not have any wire other than the regular antenna lead. it comes straight from the window antenna. but for coupe, there is an antenna module, with a yel/grn wire coming from it. i think this is what you hook up to on the stock harness (NOT the grn/yel speaker wire). if you have a sedan and only connect the antenna lead and the reception is good, i wouldnt worry. for coupe, i think you need to connect power antenna wire too.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys!
It is a 2005 Civic SE, but it is a Canadian car. I was confused about this initially as well, but it seems that it is equivalent to the DX (if Wikipedia is correct). So I don't have the Panasonic special edition head unit.
I am going to take the advice and not hook up the dimmer and illumination wires. I will connect the blue wire ("power antenna") from the harness to the blue wire from the head unit and see what happens. There is only one antenna wire from the harness (which seems to be in agreement with what you said, gearbox, since I have the sedan and not the coupe).
If I understand correctly, the only thing that can go wrong if this doesn't work is that I get bad radio reception (no smoke or frying of wires). Can anyone reassure me? Haha
PS: I will be installing this in a couple weeks, and not immediately (I don't currently have the car with me). You might hear back from me then, if I run into problems. So hopefully you don't!

Re: Rookie Head Unit Install
i have a sedan and i still hooked the blue antenna wires together, altho i have a sneeking feeling if i trace the blue harness wire back to the oem plug, there will not be a wire there. so it wont hurt to hook it up anyway, it just wont go anywhere. be sure to still hook up the big antenna lead plug tho.
