Possible Alternator Problems

The interior & exterior lights were pulsing on my 02 civic. this morning my day time running lights as well as my high beams went. A little while later, after i turned off my interior/exterior lights i heard a buzzing/grinding noise coming from the opposite side of the fire wall from the glovebox. any ideas on what could be the issue at hand?

Re: Possible Alternator Problems

No ideas on the buzzing sound, but I would check a couple of things.
1) Your battery. Depending how old the car is, it could just be that your battery no longer holds a charge
2) Fuse box and other wiring. If you've just blown a fuse or two, this could be a simple and cheap fix.

If your battery is charging fine (I get mine checked at the dealer twice a year when I bring it in for winter and spring servicing) then look at your alternator. It's always a possibility.

Re: Possible Alternator Problems

Couldn't the buzzing/grinding be the alternator bearings grinding? Try taking off the belt and spin the alt. pulley, you should be able to tell if there is any rough movement in it. You can also have your alternator checked for free at the auto parts store, if you feel like taking it off.
