New System
Re: New System
No circuit city or best buy....wayy over priced. If you are really concerned with sound quality over spl and your budget conscious, your ideal sub would be an alpine type r. Sony is crap (been there done that). Did anyone even ask what type of music you listen to??? That is a more than necessary question! Sealed vs Ported? What type of sub? All depends on the type of music you listen to......Personally, once i went sealed, i decided i will never go back to ported and sacrifice sq over spl.
Don't you think 2 12" might be a little excessive? I have one 12" type x with *only* 500watts going to it and it hits HARD! If i'm listening to any heavy hitting bass song, i have to turn the bass down on EVERYTHING (bass controller, headunit) just to make it listenable.
I have a focal component set up front, a ridiculously large set of JL 6X9's in the back, 1 12" alpine type x, JL audio 300/4, 500/1, and a JL cleansweep with a 5 farad cap. I have absolutely no dimming whatsoever and i have a cheap duralast battery from kragen's.

Re: New System
spudz904 thts kinda wut i was aiming to go get i wanted a type x so i can u kno turn everythingdown and listen nicely with a bump and whn i see jerks with the rattleboxes i can pump it n shut em out but me im more of just being loud n shut down the guy next to me so i was thinkin one type x would b good enough but i wannaa kno wut kinda set up i need...how is tht one working for u? i wont starve the sub though ima deff give it atleast a good 2000watts amp is ur setup running good no car problems?
Re: New System
The 12" I have now supposedly handles 250 watts...but sounds more like 150, which is ok, but not enough for me! I've had both 2 12's and 2 10's before, but have never run enough wattage to em to make em thump right. By "tight" bass, I mean I don't want just pure loudness, and the sub not being able to hit the notes accurately. And by sound quality I don't mean quiet and subtle... I want em' loud! But clean... Thats why i'm aimin' for JL. I got to listen to 2 12" W1s getting about 200 watts a piece the other day, and they sounded glorious
. Louder than most of my past systems. I figure a 500 watt amp will do the subs justice.

At first, I was worried that a single 12" alpine type x with just 500watts wouldn't hit hard enough but I was wrong. With it turned up, everything in my car shakes and my back window flexes.
Re: New System
two different subs running off one amp isnt right, but two subs off two seperate amps tuned with the right box dimensions and amp settings may sound okay, especially if your careful with the gain....
my setup is
alpine 9883hu
alpine mrp-f450 pushing polk/momo components 6.5"
infinity 611a pushing two type-r 10"
its defineatly a SQ setup, but adjusting the bass and sub level makes it louder than i care to use. my seatbelts jump off the seats, my dashboard vibrates, and everything in the cupholders/center console can vibrate to hell
ive had 2 seperate sets of 6.5" speakers, two sets of subs, and 4 different boxes for the two sets of subs
Re: New System
wow spudz only 500!?!?! omg imagine if u had a monster amp in there lol! but yea im kinda like those ppl u hate mainly cuz i cant get any dynamat or sounddeadner so my trunk rattles like one of those noisemakers u spin on a stick ****...agghhh!! i hate it i mean like if u hear from front its crazy bass hehe but from behind ugh! hate it so i put my subs in the backseat sometimes hehehehe! but yea i got a circuit city setup i wont lie i was uneducated about everything whn i got it...i knew sum or another so got a good setup but for the price if i woulda known i woulda deff got a type r atleast but hey i cant complain for sony this system does knock pretty good i can only imagine wut damage i can do with a type R or even an X omg! i kno next system i do ima deff do it right and well prepare it
Re: New System
Everyone makes mistakes. My first setup was all sony and it rattled the hell out of my car. I felt like i was driving a paint can shaker. That was with 2 12" in a huge ported box. When i went with a tiny sealed box with an alpine type x that annoying rattling almost completely disappeared. It just vibrates now
Re: New System
ooo wow really! lol ok well i guess yea cuz the box takes up all tht space n stuff all the air n soundwaves got nowhere to go but the trunk so with a smaller setup got more space to move around would i b right assuming tht? if so thts perfect cuz i wanted to get a type R aiming for a type X if i can get enough money together to power it..i just hate the rattle...if anything ill put the speaker in the bakseat heehehe oh well speakers r out of my car now anyways didnt wanna kill another battery till i upgraded all the electricals so hopin to work on a type X soon lol
Re: New System
I ended up getting 2 12" type r's. Unfortunately, the alpine amp I have is gonna give both of the subs a mere 500 watts... which is what 1 of em can handle rms. but, i'm still looking foward to seeing the things bump. They're supposed to arrive late this week. Anybody have experience with type R's? From what i've heard, they're pretty clean subs. I'm thinking that 500 watts of alpine bass will hit pretty nice...
Re: New System
Edit...i posted earlier that I am not having any problems with my setup, well I spoke too soon. My two amps are pulling 800 watts and the alternator in our cars produces 70amps=840watts. So for 8 months, I was slowly draining down the battery and not producing nearly enough power for my system. My car has been in a constant struggle for power between my car and amp. I'm now getting a 140amp alternator. I was advised that anything more powerful could possibly damage the car or cause it to shake (idk why). I also was told I need to get a power supply for my system before the guy will revamp my alternator?? Have no idea why and am desperately researching the problem.

Re: New System
wow same thing happend to me with my cheapo sony system imagine tht eekk well my battery died on me n i needed a jump everytime i turned the car off cuz it wouldnt take a charge..so i pulled the system out for now got a new batt n im workin on upgrading to a duralast gold and a H.O. alt but wut?? they say a stronger alt could damage car?? how?? i was lookin into prob like a 250+ amp alt if possible but wanna look into it make sure everything will work smoothly
Re: New System
Hey greenbay, I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on this. Before I bought my new subs I had 2 12w1v1. These are JL's original w1's. They have been hitting hard and clear from 2001 til recently. The only reason that they have been replace was b/c the amp was more powerful then the subs and the subs were actually blown. Since JL makes such good quality subs though you could never tell unless u turned of the door speakers and just listened to them.
I just replaced them with Rockford Fosgate P2's. They were cheap and matched the specs of the amp perfectly. For the price they are very nice. I don't believe that they have the quality the JL's did. All in all though for the price the JL's are the biggest bang for your buck. They are the tightest sounding subs I have ever heard. They aren't the loudest but I plan on upgrading to w3's once I get more spending money.

Re: New System
Thanks for the advice mrplow. I just got done putting in 2 12" Alpine type Rs and an Alpine MRP-m850 amp, giving them 500 wrms. I wish I could give em 1000, but 500's plenty. They're pretty clean subs, and i'm happy with my purchase. Eventually, I'll prolly buy JL, if and when my Alpines bust - which may take a while lol. I'm really happy with the type R's tho - i'd reccomend em to anyone on a somewhat tight budget looking for some decent bass.
Re: New System
Yeah I definitely love Alpine. I have the CDA-9886 headunit and just bought two sets of Alpine Type-X components with the 1000/4 amp to come. One thing I don't like about Alpine is their subs. They sound great but they are all higher powered subs. They have the power but are no way as tight as the JL's are. Glad to hear you like them. I have thought about them but I like tight clear hitting base and may skip on subs all together b/c o the components I have. They have a frequency response of like 15 which isn't bad for door speakers. Keep me updated on if anything happens or if you ever get it spl tested what the results are.
