Sealing the ports will probably make it sound worse.. with ported enclosures TUNING is very important.. dropping subs in a generic ported box sometimes turns out to have horrible reslults... For sealed the volume of air in the box has to be pretty accurate or the subs cold sound very sloppy and "hollow".... Get a an enclosure made to match your subs t/s Parameters..go ported if you want more SPL(loundess) and mow frequency extension..go sealed if you want a little tighter bass.

Noob to ICE, but from what I read, sealed enclosures do give a better transient response.....so why not give it a try. With rap though, I would think you would want a more boomy bass.....I listen to jazz, so I prefer a tighter less boomy bass....

that's true in most cases, but with small ported enclosures you can get the same transientresponses as with sealed, with better low frequency extension and little more putput.

Cheers

I would think however that if you do seal it...you may need more wattage to get the same SPL....I would think you could seal it with some of that dense particle board, I think its called MDF...not the OSB....or some good plywood, or even some plexiglass. Perhaps not do anything TOO permanent, as you may want to revert back to what you had before....

you can do that..but the volume of ai inside the box may not be too appropriate for your sub and you end up with granny fart sounding bass .

Well, you can get a sealed box, but from my experience with Concept's subs (GD-12s), they'll blow pretty easy in sealed boxes. These things love air. If you can afford it, get an audio shop to build a ported box to concept's specs for your sub.

So, instead of creatinga new thread, i'm gonna post here, i have a question about Ports:

I'm building a new subwoofer box, for my little JL 8w3 (sorry to whom i promised a picture of it in teh spare tire well, i'll come when i instann the new sub box, i promise!!) I'm using the info i'm getting from Winisd. the problem is that I do'n thave the space for ports of that size and i know, wiht smaller ports (2" PVC diameter) there is a problem with port noise. For now, i'm going to use a normal 2" pvc pip (and i'm goign to order a port flare for it soon.

1) For now, should i sand down the edges of the pipe? I remember reading about doign that somewhere, i think.

2) another question about general box building, I would liek to not try carpetting it (the last box turned out like poop) and i wantto paint/sand/ polish it to a glossy finish. and tips on that?

Thanks for any help!!
-Ed
