opinion on speakers for my car
looking to replace the factory speakers on my 04 civic si..
what size should they be? i'm guessing 6.5" in the front and 6"x9" in the rear?
looking for used but fairly new stuff and my budget would be around $300 max for front and rear speakers not including amps if required..
im planning on not having subwoofers..
im noob at this but how does this look?
Infinity Reference 605cs Component Speaker System
Pioneer TS-A6969 6"x9" 4-way Speaker

Were it me, I'd replace the fronts only, putting the entire $300 towards a nice set of components, rather than putting in some entry level equipment in front and back. The rear fill is more for rear seat passengers. Were you to replace both, and amp both, the rear fill would drown out the front fill because of their location, and would screw your stage up something fierce. Your music would sound as if it's coming from behind you. Keep the stock rears, and run them off the deck, or ditch them completely. Get a good set of components, and a nice amp to run them, and it'd sound much better than replacing both with entry level equipment. For $300 bucks, you could get pretty nice set to replace your fronts.
Also, you'll want to amp them. It makes no sense to replace the stocks and not amp them. No matter what deck you have, stock or aftermarket, you're only going to get around 12 watts per channel max. That's not quite enough to even get the speakers to sound 50% as good as their potential. You're only going to sound as good as your weakest link. If you're running the stock radio, make sure to get a quality line out convertor (LOC). Some examples of quality LOC's are JL's CleanSweep, Audio Control's LS6, or the Phoenix Gold one, forgot the model number (Mega? Beuller, beuller?). Again, you're only going to get as good of sound as your weakest link.

Ok, so it's not a stock deck, and alpine makes good decks. You're still going to want to amp. A model number on the alpine would help, but I digress.
As for "thump", you'll actually lose some lower end by going to aftermarket speakers, as stock speakers are full range speakers, meaning they are designed to play the full range of audio frequencies. Aftermarket speakers (components, coax, triax, etc) are designed to play a range of frequencies. The midbass playing the mid bass frequencies, and the tweeter designated to play the high frequencies. You're going to lose some bass with them, and you'll probably notice it. This is why people add subs to their systems. They are designed to play sub bass/low frequencies. From your initial post, you don't seem to want to block rock, rather upgrade your sound over stock. You could simply add a small sub, like an 8" to cover your lows. Sure, there are some speakers(midbass) that will go lower than others, as all speakers are not made equal. That's the beauty of it, you can analyze your musicality and determine what speakers are the best fit for you based on your music tastes.

i was thinking of finding full range speakers.. is that a not as good option? the reason i dont want subs is because i dont want to build a box and put it in the trunk.. i kinda like my trunk space as i use it often.. unless i take out the spare tire, there isnt much room left.. as for the alpine deck, it is the CDA 9831
this thread is very helpful. i'm also in the process of replacing my stock speakers and i also was going to go with new components in the front and 6x9's in the rear but now i'm having second thoughts.
Rep for popcorn playa. thanks for all the help bro.

You can find speakers that go a tad lower than others. You could do a mutt set, meaning that you get one brand of mid woofer and another brand tweeter and crossover. It's no new thing.
However, if you want entry level pricing and a speaker that performs more full range than most of your budget speakers, the JL Audio VR series coax goes fairly low for a mid woofer and sounds good in any application. If you don't have an EX (if I remember correctly these are the only ones with tweeter pods, I sold my EX a while back, but I try to be helpful still around here) you won't have to buy sail panels from an EX to install tweets in the factory location, as those are coax.
For a mutt set, I like the Adire Audio Koda 6 midwoofer, because of their ability to go low. They're about $100 per set, which is a great price for the way they perform. Then some other tweet. My mutt set I ran for a long time consisted of the Koda 6's, and Image Dynamics NX30 tweeter and a crossover I picked up from somewhere else. That was one of the most phenominally performing low budget setups I've ever owned, or heard for that matter. Their(Adire) Extremis 6.8 inch midwoofer sounds good in there, but it requires some work to get in teh door, I won't go into that.
CDT's sets also sound pretty damned good in y'all's car (former civic owner), as I've had their components in the Civic before selling it as well. They sound good in other applications as well, but you're talking civics here.
I could go on and on, but I'm cutting it short for the purpose of not listing 45 speakers or so and giving you this large *** list to sort through. I would, however, recommend going to an audio shop and listening to different speakers and get what sounds best to your ears, as you're going to be the one listening to them daily. Your music tastes will differ from mine and everyone elses, so what sounds good to me might not sound good to you, and vice versa. It'd be hard to find Adire's in a shop, so that's more of a word of mouth thing than anything else, unless you can find someone that has them that you can listen to. Listen to as many sets as you can, and if possible listen to them in a car as opposed to on a sound board, as they will sound different installed in a vehicle than they will in a listening room.
i've read on another site that mix and matching a mutt set isnt as good an idea as it would not result in a clean and natural sound... did you get that problem with your mutt set?
what about alpines? should i bother considering an alpine set?

How is it not a good idea? I'd like a scientific explaination from the person that said that, as there is not one. If you have to crossover tuned in the speakers range, and to the frequency range that you want from the speakers, you'll get better results than an off the shelf set. I've always gotten better results mixing and matching things. I've never been brand dedicated, and never will be unless someone wants to sponsor me. Other than that, there's no reason to believe that mixing and matching will do anything in terms of audio. It definitely will not effect performance. The person that said that obviously buys into marketing ploys. If that were true, then explain to me why competitors don't all run the same gear, and the same brand? Fact of the matter is, there is no right answer, as with boxes for subs, another topic for another time.
As for alpines, I love their decks. I'm not so big of a fan of their speakers. Their subs are okay, but I've never been real impressed with any of their components/coax speakers. To you, however, they might be what you're looking for. I'd give them a listen at an audio shop, were I you, to determine if they're what you like.
