wots killin my battery?

well
its the second time this has happened...
i have a 1200w pg amp and an older alpine alarm aside from all the regular power running in my car. anyways, seems like the only time my batt dies is when i leave it parked for 3-4 days with the alarm on. my theory is that the battery is stock on my 02 , and i figure, by driving it i keep it alive, but it just dies out from the slow usage of the alarm.....i must sound stoopid too, i just woke up....final question....exide like megahurtz or yellowtop? if so, what model numbers??? thanks doods.

Does your amp stay on all the time, or is it hooked up with the amp turn on lead from your head unit?

ok just checking cause an amp turned on all the time but not playing anything still uses a little power.

maybe you just need a new battery. One thing you can do is let the car idle for 10 to 20 minutes one day and see if that cures it. that should let the battery charge up a lot.

yeah but once the car is off nothing should be drawing power other than the LED for the alarm and for the alarm itself. This is a very minimal power drain for normal alarms and should not cause the battery to die within months

Yes, if that doesn't charge like mine, then your battery is totally dead...You can also check the voltage if you worry about the alternator (should be above 12.5V all the time when the car is on, minor flucuation is acceptable around 12.5 region if not 14.6V)...If that shows up and your battery isn't charging, it's the battery....If the alternator keeps below 12V then it's the alternator/charging system issue...

When I drive around the voltage ranges anywhere from 11.8V to 14.2V. Once dipped down to 11.6 but that was momentarily.
Should be 12.2V to 14.2V always (unless you are plaing your system a lot)

I've never got down to below 12V unless I was at idle with the "new" batter which I just purchase(well, account for some leak when the battery sits in the store). Then when I am driving I got up to 14.6V even when my stereo is playing at "normal" level and 4 HID lamps are on along with AC at night....Idle around 12-12.3V depends on the load.....Actually anything between 11.8V to 14.8V are considered "normal", it really depends on your rpm, throttle level (it takes more load when I full throttle, don't know why), whether VTEC engaged (again, I think the VTEC solenoid has some load or something), and lots of other stuffs....

BTW, it looks like there is no "new" battery exists....such "new" batteries are just rebuilds and the parts inside can go bad very often....

There's a faster way to check, is that you go to a shop and ask for charging the battery....If the battery has stinky smell, then your battery is "chemically" broken down and cannot be repaired (cannot be charged as well)....

You can also check to see if the battery is charging by opening the top where you put water in there...Bubbles should exist when there is chemical reaction between acid and water when charging (releasing hydrogen when the acid reacts with water, and the charging process keeps the reaction faster)....If it's as smooth as a well, then it's dead...

Last semester I had the factory battery in my car(01) and about half way through my car was having a hard time starting after sitting from sunday to friday, and almost didn't start on me once (I think my capacitor saved me a lil) so I changed to a yellowtop optima and its fine ever since.
It might just be a dieing battery.

EDIT: Forgot to say I have an alarm and 2 12s running of a 600watt amp. Also mine voltage is around 14.2 after start up since its charging the battery and once I drive a while its in the 12s except when my system hits on a heavy note.

Where do you read your voltage from?

Forget about checking voltages, you know your charging system is working properly because if you drive it enough the battery stays charged. Try unhooking your alarm for some time and see if the battery drains that way. I'm almost 100% positive it's your alarm. Alarm's are infamous for going bad and draining the battery!

just start with a new battery. The stock one is crap, and it might have a dead cell.

Mount that piece below center console (behind the cpu holder) if you have a 03+ may be a good idea.....
