Hooking up Amp AND ipod ?'s ***WARNING, I'M RETARDED***

Ok guys, I'm not smart with car audio. I don't even own this Civic but I used to, and now I need to help out the current owner of said car.

In 2001 I had my amp and subs installed in the car, I kept the factory head unit.

Two weeks ago, the current owner needed the unlock code for the factory unit....long story short, she couldn't get it so I told her I would just install this old Clarion HU for her. It's not the greatest HU in the world, but atleast it works.

SO, I have never installed a HU myself but I did it this Wed. Got the wiring harness, mounting kit and all that. I connected everything up and it works.........everything except the amp/subs work now.

Why doesn't the amp/subs work? Remember, the wiring setup was originally for the stock HU, as we all know that stock HUs don't have pre-outs.

This Clarion unit has dual preouts, however I don't know what to be looking for in terms of the RCAs that are coming from my amp. What the hell should I be looking for? I know this is such a n00b question, but I have no clue what the hell I am doing.

iPod connection: So I just trying to see what would happen if I were to connect one of the dual preouts to a Y cable, and then plug it into my iPod. I connected it and the iPod actually plays through my system, BUT only on the back two speakers (maybe the subs, I didn't really check though). Why would it even work in the first place, those are pre-out connections?

I have scoured the web for a manual on this Clarion unit but it is from 2000, so that ain't gonna happen either. Does anyone know what the brown wire is for?

IF anyone can help, please chime in here. I'm retarded. Thanks.

does your amp turn on (light to show its on)? if not, run the remote wire from your amp to the back of the HU. I don't know what they used to turn on your HU before, but you must have removed it. they probably had it hooked on the ignition wire in harness. just check were the remote wire from amp is connected and connect it to your HU remote wire. or is it turning on, but not hearing sound? if you didn't touch anything in the back were amp is, you should hear sound cause they must have tapped in your rear speakers to get signal to amp, so even if you changed the HU, the speaker wires are still being powered by your new HU.

Thanks, I'll check that tomorrow when it's light out.

I know for a fact that the amp turns on, the red light turns on. I'm pretty sure that I connected everything that came from the original honda wiring setup though, even though now I can use rca for the amp.

If your amp is not turning on, check the wiring on the back of your head unit. You may have a blue as well as a blue/white wire back there. If you have both, make sure the remote wire is connected to the blue/white. The blue/white wire is the amplifier turn on lead. The solid blue wire is the power antenna lead and most likely only turns on when the source is set to AM/FM.

Ok I just checked and the wires are connected correctly. There is no solid blue wire coming from my HU, only blue/white and it is connected to the honda harness (on the blue wire, there is no blue/white on it).

I'm retarded, it isn't my car so I don't really care all that much. I just wanted to get the amp working for her.

it is connected somewhere cause he said that the amp did turn on. it's probably connected to the honda harness ignition wire. if the amp turns on, then it's the speaker signal or the wires going to your sub that is the problem, it could be your amp, but you said it was working before right? check how the signal is coming into your amp (RCA or speaker level input) and follow the wires to see if they are all connected. but if you didn't touch any of that, you shouldn't have any problems there.

yeah they probably hooked it up by tapping the rear speakers, but the new HU is still sending power to the speakers, so he should still be getting power to the amp. only if they put the line level converter somewhere behind the dash and ran the RCA's to the back, and then when he installed his new HU, he didn't connect the wires back to the converter????

First off, 'she' is a member of my family and that is just gross.

Secondly, shouldn't you be out with your boys instead of making n00b comments in the I.C.E. Forum?

Re: Hooking up Amp AND ipod ?'s ***WARNING, I'M RETARDED***

Well after reading all this...the amp turns on...and no sound...u DO have RCA's hooked up from the deck straight to the amp right? And if so, do you have them hooked up to the OUTPUT or INPUT on the amp? Cause that right there can be a problem. Should be relatively easy to fix...might just be something simple.

Re: Hooking up Amp AND ipod ?'s ***WARNING, I'M RETARDED***

Check all of your connections. Make sure you have the amphooked up to the non-faded RCA outputs (if it's like the clarion pro audio unit I have in my truck from 2000, it'll have faded, non-faded, front, and rear channels RCA wise, along with an AUX input). Make sure you have it connected to the correct one. From there, to hook up the iPod, you can simply plug in a rca to mini stereo convertor and then connect the iPod through it. Switch the HU to aux to run the iPod (you have to control it through the iPod controls instead of through the HU, but I prefer to do it that way). Also check your turn on lead again (if you're not too lazy check the entire wire from the connection all the way to the amp. It could have a bad spot and need replacing.) Make sure you have a good solid connection at both ends, and that the amplifier is turning on when the radio is turned on. From there, you may want to check the grounds on the amp. The connection could be bad there, and it's not allowing it to turn on, or it's sending the amp into protect mode.
