microwave oven in car
microwave oven in car
yes you heard me. I work busy days and everyone is rushing to the microwaves to heat their food while I wait in line. Basically I want to skip the line and just go to my car and warm up some frozen food or whatever. The question is do you think the 7th Gen Civic alternator will be able to handle it? I have a power converter and I occasionnaly use devices with my civic but I try not to over stress the alternator. (if it was my converter would beep like crazy).

Holy Pimp my ride batman... Call Mad Mike, he should be able to help you. Here's a tip. Set your clock 2 minutes fast, and leave your desk 2 minutes earlier than everyone. Tell your boss that's what time your clock said it was.

Why don't you just get your own microwave for your cubicle/office space, instead of running out to your car. Wouldn't that be a little more logical?
Unless of course you work at best buy or something like that.

Here in Texas there is no need for a microwave in the car. It gets hot enough in the car during summer. Take a morning brake at 10:00 and then at 12:00 your food is ready.
haha well the place i work at is a temp agency so i won't be there long enough to buy them a microwave :P
most of the time I like to sit in my car, eat and watch clips from my psp. but there are times i have to go in early to warm up some food or whatever and its just more convienient if i do it in the comfort of my own car.
ah wells can't win them all.

only one way to find out for sure: take the microwave in your hose, slap it in the front seat, and plug that biotch in... if your Hot Pocket gets cooked, you're good to go... if your alternator gets cooked, well, that sucks...

The converter idea was pretty good but... You might wanna have a second battery just for the converter. Might suck it up a bit...
i dont plan to run the microwave with the car off. I'll idle of course. its not like a microwave use is not long, maybe just 2 mins? they say its fine as long as you have a 12 volt adapter and not a ciggarette car lighter. but mine has max 125 watts and that just gives me the creepies... bleh i'll live without it i guess.

get a remote start. hit it when you leave the office/wherever you work (if you're within proximity of the car)...
get your burrito or whatever...
place in engine bay for 3-5 minutes...
enjoy!

The Math.
Alternator 13.5 V and 80 A -> 1080 W
The microwave usually have 750 to 1200 W, function of age, size etc.
You need an inverter directly connected to the cars battery and run it only with the engine running (higher than idle). The power conversion also is down with couple of % energy losing. So for example you have a 1200 W inverter and this consume 1400 W the difference is the heat produced by inverter.
The power inverters usually give the power as short time not continuous working. Check what they meaning as short time. Is that time convenient for you to warm your food. Think that at maximum load, the components are overheating and the life of the inverter is reduced.
I see a solution if you have an inverter at 1200 W and go find a small microwave of 750 W power (look at the back of the oven. usually the power is marked if not, for sure they have the 120 V and the amperage and just multiply them).
Definitely the alternator will be at full load, so probably if you use it very often and for longer defrost, in time can kill your alternator.
Don’t forget to dimension the electrical wires function of the load you use and the protection fuse. You don’t want to burn down your car.
Kind of wired but how about a fridge?
. Actually is a cooler box - which use the Peltier effect. These are commercially available for cars. This is just a bonus.
BTW. You can use a gas power generator to…
This is better.
