Stock Speakers too "bright" sounding?
Stock Speakers too "bright" sounding?
I just hooked up a amp to my stock front speakers in my 2004 Civic DX.
The extra power and/or x-over set at 80hz from the amp eliminated the distortion I had been getting, which is great. However, now I have noticed the highs are so damn bright, they cut through my eardrums like a razor! If I turn up the sound enough so the midrange sounds good, the highs are painful. I've tried equalizing it with my Alpine headunit, but I really can't.
Anyone else noticed this with the stock speakers? Or might it be the amp?
I've got some CD Tech HD's that I'll be putting in, I guess I will find out the answer then. These sounded fine with the same amp, as I remember.
Anyway, just a random question. Wasn't sure if it was just me losing my hearing.

short answer, stock speakers suck. I have infinity tweeters and 2 way in the door with the tweeter rotated down to face the floor. Sounds perfect. Speakers are amped, tweeters are not and they are still very loud for the highs but not enough to hurt your ears. Buy new speakers.

stock speakers have very limited frequency response, youre trying to make them do something they cant.

the problem is that stock speakers suck and they aren't meant to be amped. normally when using passives you could attenuate the tweeters by 3 or 6db to get rid of the sharpness, but you don't get that convenience with shitty stock crap.
my stock speakers sucked when i got my car, so the next weekend i had Eclipse 3-ways put in the front and 4-ways in the back and its perfectly clear. No distortion untill about 27(out of 35) or so on an alpine headunit and 20 is plenty loud enough.
It's kindof pointless to put an amp on the stock speakers.
And the Eclipse were 100 for the front and 150 for the back.

IM running a Boston Accoustics Amp powering my Alpine Type X components and wow
they sound good. Telly was really impressed with em when he installed em, my subs will start to distort WAYYY before my internals can. Thread
