i think it would be cool to have it tell you directions cause I always get lost. But i hate the way the screen looks. Just doesn't match with the rest of the dash. I wouldn't use it much anyway.

Debateable.
Honestly, I'm a guy, so I don't need a map, and I have a good sense of direction... and I really do get a kick out of finding alternative routes when I am in strange territory. So I give it a
But for girls, or for guys that have no sense of direction, then you may need it

I thought I wouldn't use mine much, but damn it gets me out of alot of jams. Was on the 95 in miami and gonna be late for an appt. and the 95 was jammed, i clicked "Detour" and it took me off the next exit on an alternate route and I wasn't late. It's not just for directions either. I use mine as a phonebook cause it has tons and tons of addresses and phone numbers. If we are hungry and I just say "find nearest restaurant or fast food" and I get a list and go through till i find one we like. I couldn't go w/o one anymore. But YMMV and that is my opinion.

Definitely worth it; my friends and I use GPS navigation all the time. I have a USB GPS receiver plugged into my carPC running either Mappoint or iGuidance (depending on what I'm playing around with and which maps I loaded for it), and it's gotten me where I need to be with minimal hassle. My friends have the standalone units available at Future Shop/etc, and those are pretty good too, though I find the screens a touch small.
Pros:
Cons:
Good brands are Garmin, Magaellan for the aftermarket ones.
- No cost for service or updates, just plug and play
- detailed maps of major roads, small roads and POI (points of interests)
- Prices are dropping
- easy to use, touch screen/voice prompts ( don't really need to look at it)
- Aftermarket units are a good cheaper alternative to factory installed ones
Cons:
- some theif can just come grab it
- Not useful if just for the average driver (business/traveler ok)
- Aftermarket screens are typically smaller than factory ones

all correct except for theif...umm theyr portable just take it off the suction cup. good models are Garmin c330 (399-499) c550(799-?) nuvi 660(999 )nuvi350 (699-799) and magaellan....i hate that brand also consider tom tom One 499....umm Nuvi 660 and 350 are for travlers have pointless features unless ur going out of the USA and out of canada....such as mp3 picture viewer bloootooth but all Garmins come with WAAS technology for better destination accuracy do not buy alpine pioneer sony...we have this at best buy...they are garbage and the other tom toms got nothing on the tom tom One

+1 worth it....i love mine
if you ask ANYONE WITH A NAVI, they willl tell you first handed that its TOTALLY WORTH IT....
most headunit NAVIs today basically DRIVE UR CAR for you....
example....on the freeway to somewhere.... with a navi, u dont needa think where ur going...you can just drive...and not look at or look for any stupid signs.... and then pay attention the last 1/4 mi when ur navi tells u to turn right on the next exit/ramp/road.....

mine saved me in chicago when there were too many exits close together and i didnt know which to take, i got on the wrong one and was on a different freeway, and the gps proceeds to take me through all sorts of different places but it finally got back on track. and it recalculated quickly too.
I bought the Garmin c320 from Costco via this link over at fatwallet. (~$270)
I have all Canada and US maps on my c320 with my 1GB SD card.
I then loaded it with my own customs Points of Interest such as red light cameras, speed traps, Starbucks, etc. It has already saved me once from a speed trap it alerted me to on 95 North 1 mile before I got to the speed trap (under bridge trap).

my blackbird showed me a shorter route to school that i take couple times a week, i knew about this route but didn't know it was actually shorter, woot, this is gonna save me miles in the long run,,,i love this thing!
you gotta upgrade the firmware to 1.1 with the dvd update disc(3.8gigs!!), or else it'll suck, but then again, i didn't even update mine yet and it works fine, got my update disc waiting at home, can't wait to go home to update it and see what it can really do!

hahaha........eugene........ u neeeda change that pix if ur sign.......u needa add ur blackbird on now...
I have a TomTom 710 unit and I love it. On average I'll use it once every 2 weeks or so, but it's great not having to pay attention to a printed mapquest sheet, especially when driving at night when roadsigns usually aren't lit. Mine links to my Verizon Razr VC3 so I can talk on the phone as I'm driving with no interferance involved.

just got my alpine blackbird and love it, even before the software update, which i ordered already, jus waitin for the pmd-dock to come in
